The Acropolis of Athens, the so-called "sacred rock", is the most important archaeological site in Greece and is situated on a hill in the center of today's Athens. On the Acropolis there are three ancient temples, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Aptera Nike. There is also the monumental entrance, the Propylaea. All the monuments of the Acropolis are made of Pentelic marble and were built during the Golden Age of Pericles, the so-called Classical Period (450-330 BC). The Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena, the patron saint of the city.

This dazzling museum at the foot of the Acropolis' southern slope showcases its surviving treasures. The collection covers the Archaic period to the Roman one, but the emphasis is on the Acropolis of the 5th century BC, considered the apotheosis of Greece's artistic achievement. The museum reveals layers of history: ruins are visible in its floor, and, through floor-to-ceiling windows, the Acropolis is always visible above. The surprisingly good-value restaurant has superb views; there’s also a fine museum shop.

The district of Koukaki (or as it is, Koukaki) is located on the southeast side of the Philopappou hill in Athens. It borders the areas of Petralona, Kallithea, Neos Kosmos, the Acropolis and Makrigianni and crosses Syngrou Avenue. Koukaki is a densely populated area, saturated in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it remains a fairly precise location because of its location beneath the Acropolis and Philopappos Hill and very close to the historic center of Athens.

Nestled into the historical neighborhood of Plaka, Anafiotika is easy to miss, but arguably the most photogenic part of Athens. The buildings here are crafted in the traditional Cycladic style, as they were originally the homes of workers who had come to Athens from the island of Anafi to assist in the construction of King Othon's Palace. Anafiotika is beautifully reminiscent of the Greek islands, and a wonderful place to sit for a coffee or drink.
