Siena is seen from afar to shine perfect in its medieval equilibrium. The three hills on which it sits stand out in an idyllic rural landscape, in which the boundaries of the old center fade like a time in a countryside that at times still seems to be portrayed in the Allegory of Good Government painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in the rooms of the Palace Public. Siena, untouched for centuries, is today shown to a large extent as it appeared in 1300, and the preservation of a unique and coherent medieval architectural heritage is one of the main reasons for visiting a splendid city, long aware of the fragility of its equilibrium.

At that time, its foundries and the artistic factories of "corallini" vases (red paintings) were renowned, whose decoration technique spread throughout the Roman world.
