Lovely drive up over the black mountains to the ancient priory at Llantony. Small cafe. Search internet for Gospel Pass, the highest road pass in Wales. Starts just outside Hay on Wye. Follow signs for Capel le fin. Not for the feint hearted though as narrow roads. Beautiful views over the black mountains and Hay Bluff. Carry on to Pandy and stop at St Martins Church, the most crooked church in Great Britain, at Cwmyoy. Good walking area. Our neighbour is the historic local parish church. One of the largest and finest churches in south Herefordshire. Madley is the birthplace of St Dyfrig, (Dubricius,) and became a destination for pilgrims since the 6th century. The path diagonally across the lane, which goes to the church, is the ancient pilgrims path. Thought to house the last medieval crypt in England. It has a polygonal apse, one of only 3 in England. Bell ringing occasionally on a Sunday. Chimes the quarters , half and full hour. 5 mins walk.

Always check if the place you are visiting is open.

Hereford has a small population therefore for economic reasons some pubs and venues are not open everyday. Most pubs seem to shut on a Monday for example. We have learned to check on the internet first before travelling. Locals don't say on Wye. For example its Ross or Hay. Leominster is pronounced Lempster.

Transport

There is a local bus service, 449, which takes you into Hereford City . Last time we used it it was 5.40 per person! It stops and starts by the post office/shop. To return either go to the county bus station or wait at bus stop in Broad Street. Ask to get off as it comes back towards the church otherwise you end up going down the road further. Check bustimes.org for timetable. On Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays you can get the Hay Ho! 39A bus to Hay on Wye. We use Hi Town Taxis 01432 354321 (cost £20-£22)
