Food scene

This is our local walking-distance pub, popular with walkers, cyclists and local families, especially at the weekend. Dog-friendly with a lovely big garden with play facilities for children. From our driveway turn left and walk to the end of the lane (10 - 15 mins) Food is all home-cooked and homely!

This is an old pub in our local village Hurstpierpoint. It has a cosy wood-panelled room with fireplace and in the summer a lovely big garden. The food is very good and it always has a buzzy atmosphere as it's the main pub hub for the village.

A really super gastropub where we go out for birthdays and anniversary meals. The food is exquisite. It's expensive but definitely worth it for special night or lunch out.

This pub has really great food and a lovely atmosphere. It has a modern extension but I really like the woody cosiness in the older part of the pub.

This restaurant has really wonderful food and wine. It has a fabulous reputation and we can recommend. It's slightly more formal than other places around so would probably recommend more for families with older children or couples.

This is a famous vineyard near us, well known for its delicious sparkling wine. They do tours and tastings and it's possible to buy a hamper of food and drink to take as a picnic in their grounds.

Ditchling Beacon is a landmark viewpoint on the South Downs which is easily walkable, along the South Downs Way, from our house. Stunning views all around and sometimes an ice cream van too!

Perhaps one of the best places to admire the naturalistic prairie style of planting made famous by the Dutch designer Piet Oudolf. This is a wonderful garden to visit for horticultural enthusiasts... it does great cake too!

City/town information

Lewes is such a pretty town about 7 miles drive away (drive via Underhill Lane along the bottom of the north side of the Downs). There are lots of lovely independent shops and cafes. It also has a lovely little castle which is the perfect size for children. I like to have lunch at the Flint Owl Cafe and also Needlemakers (a good place to park). Do walk down to the river and the shops around there.

Brighton is such a great town by the sea with so much to offer. North Laines and the Lanes are full of lovely independent shops. Then there's the Royal Pavilion - built in Taj Mahal style. And of course the famous pier and the seafront. There are theatres, comedy clubs, burlesque clubs, cocktail bars, a really great LGBT scene... it's fabulous and we feel so lucky to have it nearby. Parking can be a pain. We tend to park at the Churchill Centre car park (not the NCP one which is the most expensive) or we get the train from Hassocks.

There is no place better (I'm a Londoner!!). ... it's just 40 mins to an hour by train. The trains stop at London Victoria (walking distance to Buckingham Palace, St James's Park, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament and the London Eye) and also stops at London Bridge for the South Bank stretch of the river... Borough Market, the Globe theatre, Millennium Bridge and St Pauls, the National Theatre, the London Eye and more. For the best galleries, museums, markets, theatre, restaurants, architecture, historical monuments .... I can't really sum it up in a few sentences. But if you haven't been to London... you must go!

Neighbourhoods

This is our local village which has a pretty historic High St with a baker, butcher, deli, Co-op, cafes, pubs, gift shops, hairdressers and beauticians. It's a lovely walk across the fields - past Danny House (a very posh old people's home in an Elizabethan manor, where the then War Cabinet drafted the WW1 armistice) and a couple of fields full of alpacas which our children always loved. Turn right out of the barn and take the footpath on the left just past the red post box.

Ditchling a pretty Downlands village nearby ... well known for its arts and crafts scene. There are a couple of nice little cafes, The Bull pub and the Ditchling Arts and Crafts Museum which won the 2014 RIBA award for its architecture. We like to cycle here, via Clayton, and along Underhill Lane.
