Famous for its second-hand book shops and annual literary festival, Hay on Wye is the perfect 'mooching' town, free from chain stores and high street coffee shops. It has plenty of great coffee shops, pubs and restaurants as well as independent boutique shops. Market day on Thursday mornings is not to be missed. Most places in Hay are dog friendly and there are circular walks from the car park taking in the countryside and/or the River Wye.

Ludlow is another historic market town that in more recent years has become a Foodie hot spot. On the southern outskirts of the town the Ludlow Food Centre, Cafe and Clive Arms are well worth a visit - about 45 minutes' drive from Whitney on Wye. You can combine eating, drinking and stocking up on local produce with some lovely walks.

Herefordshire is a big county and the market town of Ross on Wye is located in the southern region, some 40 minutes drive away from Whitney on Wye. It is said the historic market town was the birthplace of tourism in 1770. Its river location makes it popular for canoeing and fishing and there is a riverside walk.
