City/town information

Saint Thomas is one of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean Sea which, together with Saint John, Water Island, Hassel Island, and Saint Croix, form a county-equivalent and constituent district of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), an unincorporated territory of the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of Saint Thomas was 51,634 with a land area of 32 square miles (83 km2). Each of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands has its own distinctive character. St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan: the capital city, Charlotte Amalie, is always bustling with activity. St. John is almost pure nature, with two-thirds of the island's landmass set aside as a national park. St. Croix, the largest of the three islands, is a combination of the two. The island of St. Thomas is serviced by the Cyril E. King International Airport. Passenger and limited car-ferry services to neighboring islands such as Water Island, Saint John, Saint Croix, and the British Virgin Islands run regularly out of the Red Hook Terminal, Charlotte Amalie, and Crown Bay Marina. The United States Virgin Islands is the only place under United States jurisdiction where the rule of the road is to drive on the left. This was inherited from what was the then-current Danish practice at the time of the American acquisition in 1917. However, because the islands are a U.S. territory, most cars are imported from the mainland United States and therefore the steering column is located on the left side of the vehicle. The island has many regular taxis from compact size to large vans, as well as open-air, covered trucks called "safaris" with bench seats. The latter usually operate only between high-traffic points, e.g., cruise-ship terminals at Havensight and Crown Bay and downtown Charlotte Amalie. Here are a few frequently asked questions that might be helpful: What kind of weather can I expect during my vacation? The U.S. Virgin Islands enjoys warm sunny weather year-round. The average winter temperature is 77ºF (25ºC), and the average summer temperature is 82ºF (28ºC). Tip: The Caribbean sun is intense, cotton clothes are the best choice for staying cool and remember to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. What is the currency in the U.S. Virgin Islands? As a U.S. territory, the currency is the U.S. dollar. Automated teller machines (ATMs) can be found throughout all three islands. Most establishments accept credit cards and traveler’s checks. The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and MasterCard. Tip: Remember when you’re traveling to put some cash and cards in a safe place as backup. What is the standard dress code in the islands? Dress is casual, but proper attire (shirts and shoes) should be worn in public areas. Bathing suits are worn at the beach and pool only. How can I stay in touch with news, work and friends and family back home? Major carriers on island are At&t, Sprint/TMobile and VIYA, which is the local provider. All other national carriers, including Verizon, will be roaming on the other networks. See your company’s website for roaming charges and details. Complimentary wifi service is also available at the villa. Tip: Remember your earpiece as it is illegal to drive while speaking on your cell phone. Can I drive in the U.S. Virgin Islands? We drive on the left side of the road. A valid U.S. or foreign license is accepted for 90 days. Seatbelts are required by law, and it is illegal to drive while speaking on your cell phone. Do I need to bring an adapter for my electronics? No adapters are required. Standard 120-volt current is used in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Are there health facilities in the U.S. Virgin Islands? Good hospitals with well-trained doctors and medical professionals are available on St. Croix and St. Thomas. The Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix and the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas are both centrally located. The Myrah Keating Smith clinic on St. John is available for patient care. If extensive medical care is needed, patients are transferred by medical boat to St. Thomas. Medical evacuation services are also available. The CDC recommends vaccines for travelers to the USVI, check their website for more information. They generally accept most national insurance coverage from providers such as Cigna, Aetna, United Healthcare, etc. Tip: It is always a good idea when you are traveling to bring any necessary medications with you. What language is spoken in the U.S. Virgin Islands? English is the official language, but you can definitely detect the sound of colorful dialects and expressions that may take time to get accustomed to. Spanish is also commonly spoken. What is the time zone? Atlantic Standard Time. During the spring and summer months we are on the same time as the U.S. East Coast. When the clocks fall back in the autumn and winter, the USVI remains an hour ahead.

Neighborhoods

Peterborg is a long, narrow peninsula on the north side of the island that separates world famous Magens Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. By securing a villa in Peterborg, you will have the pleasure of enjoying a lifestyle that focuses on the beauty and calm that Peterborg offers. Estate Peterborg is an exclusive address that hosts a preponderance of luxury homes, many within the confines of four gated communities – Peterborg East, Red Rock, Sydney’s Fancy and Dove Way. Ocean views are the common denominator in Peterborg, and many homes sit waterfront, although the geography is such that few homes can actually access the shoreline. One thing that distinguishes Peterborg is its flawlessly paved road that hugs Magens Bay and which makes it possible to scoot quickly along the length of this landmass, as well as providing a nice surface for runners and walkers, frequently seen striding along the roadside for exercise or to access nearby Magen's Bay Beach. Peterborg East, while it does not have side walks, much like most neighborhoods on St. Thomas, is also a very walker-friendly neighborhood, so please do drive carefully when traversing the area.

Bugs and sun screens tips.

Mosquitoes are commonly found in the Caribbean, but their numbers often increase following extended rainfall. No-see-ums, tiny biting flies, are also common on beaches and come out at dusk/dawn. You can prevent bites by using spray with DEET or all-natural alternative sprays and wearing light-colored, long sleeved shirts, pants, socks and shoes. Reef-safe sunscreens are also required on island.
