Sightseeing

A 'must see' while in Derbyshire. It is a stunningly palatial country house set in beautiful Capability Brown parkland. Allow for a full day out to cover the house, gardens, parkland, farm shop and fabulous adventure playground and farm yard for little ones. It holds numerous events through the year including the Chatsworth International Horse Trials on 13th-15th May 2022; The RHS Chatsworth Flower Show 9th-12th June 2022; The Chatsworth Country Fair 2th-4th September.

Our neighbouring village, a 15 minute walk away, with its Norman keep, Peveril Castle. There are lots of things to do and see including Peak Cavern (an enormous natural limestone cave) as well as Speedwell Cavern ( a lead mine which you visit by boat) and the mines of Treak Cavern and Blue John, where the semi precious stone is extracted. When you are exhausted there are lots of cafes and pubs in which to get refreshed plus oodles of gift shops. May 29th, each year, is Garland Day, when a garlanded king rides a horse at the front of a procession. The date is Oak Apple Day commemorating the restoration of the monarchy of Charles II. All a tiny bit 'Wickaman" but no one gets hurt! Castleton is noteworthy too for its Christmas Lights to be switched on Sat 17th December 2022 and on show until early January.

Eyam, a pretty village of re-newed recent historic interest as it was the original 1665 'plague village', so named because it's vicar at the time, William Mompesson, encouraged the villagers to quarantine when evidence of disease occurred amongst the locals. Various sites of interest in and around he village.

Walking

The Mam Tor/ Lose Hill walk (aka The Great Ridge) is on our door step, quite literally. One of the UK's top 10 walks, it is fabulous. I try to do it at least twice a year...so easy to forget to do these things when you live here.

Used by the RAF's Dambuster 617 Squadron of bouncing bomb fame to practice low level flying, this is a stunningly beautiful place to walk, cycle, fish or ride. The Fairholmes Visitor Centre offers cycle hire, a smart little gift shop and a cafe (only closed on Christmas Day). There is a wild swimming 'hole' at the the north end of the Howden reservoir. Personally, one of my favourite places.

A beautiful walk up Win Hill will take you to Hope Cross which marks the lands once owned by Uhtred (of The Last Kingdom) who was a real 11th century historical figure called Uhtred the Bold.

Shopping

The late David Mellor was a huge influence on British design, not just silverware and cutlery, but much of our street furniture such as traffic lights. The kitchen and factory shop is stylish and worth a visit. The factory itself can be visited by appointment.
