Perched at 8300 ft, with a population of 1300, it's about 5 miles up the road from the house. Walk through the town, or keep walking up the road out of town for some good high-altitude exercise. Yes, the 2-room school house is still in use! There's a small close-by too.
Fourth of July is quite the event. The day starts with a pancake breakfast outside the 2-room school house, then the local parade, followed by food and music at the Gold Hill Inn.

Amazing views, many places to eat, on the way to the gambling towns of Black Hawk and Central City. Head north out of town, and there's hiking. If you're lucky enough to be in town in February, it's all about Frozen Dead Guy Days. See website for more details. https://nederlandco.org/things-to-do/
