Hiking

Poke-O-Moonshine - Recommend the Observer’s Trailhead parking lot which is accessed off of Rt. 9, five miles south of Northway exit 33 (one mile south of the Ranger’s Trailhead). This is a moderate 4.6 mile round trip hike. You’ll have views of Augur Lake, Lake Champlain, and Whiteface Mountain. The goal is to climb the fire tower at the top.

Ampersand Mountain's open summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views, but you'll have to work for it. The first half of the trail is fairly easy, but once it starts going up it's relentlessly steep until the top. Give yourself plenty of time to complete this hike, especially if you aren't an avid hiker. From downtown Saranac Lake, turn right onto Route 3, heading west toward Tupper Lake. The parking area is on the right after about 8 miles. The trailhead is across the road on the left— be very careful crossing the main highway.

Ausable Chasm is open year-round. In the summer you can hike, raft and float down the river. The winter offers some amazing scenery while hiking. This is a paid attraction, so there is a fee for entering (even for just hiking).

Flume Falls can be found along the Ausable River on the southeastern side of the highway, just downstream of the popular High Falls Gorge and Whiteface Ski Resort. It is located directly across the road from the Flume Trail System and is located within the Wilmington Wild Forest. This is a fairly easy and short hike with some unofficial viewing areas for the falls. Please be careful hiking around this area - the water is fast-rushing water and needs to be taken seriously. There are a couple of parking options, but be careful crossing the highway as it can be busy with cars going fast.

There is an entrance fee. I would describe the hiking as beginner. There are some stairs and up and down hills.

Beach it

If you want to visit a great beach with views of the Green Mountains and clear water, go visit Ausable Point Campground and Day Use area for the day. This is one of my favorite places in the Champlain Valley! This spot is very popular for wind and kite surfing and they are very fun to watch. Don't worry, there is a clean bath house you can use through out the day too.
