If you want to be out on a nice nature walk by yourself or with kids/family. This park has nice walking trails around the 3 lakes and a good sized play place for kids.
They even have a nature center/aquarium with fish and other local wild life museum for kids.
The park is safe, I never felt unsafe there so def go if you have couple of hours to kill or just want to be out.

A little towards downtown but a great place to walk around and enjoy a sunset over the river. Also across the bridge on a hill there is a GREAT photo spot with Richmond skyline as background.
Very lively and nice area. There is also Belles Isle that you can walk. You can spend quite a lot of time exploring this area.
