Deep inside the rocky gorge, the footpath winds around large boulders, and at its narrowest point, the "Iron Gates" (Síderoportes), the Samaria is only four meters wide. Look out for "Kri Kri", wild goats unique to Crete.

At night the lighthouse shines in the dark and it makes for a truly kaleidoscopic vignette. Visitors can walk along the Venetian walls but it is not allowed to enter its interiors. The view from the port of Chania is absolutely amazing.

Vieux marché de Chania
Built in the shape of a cross and designed after the local market in Marseilles, the Agora is the place where fresh local produce is being sold, literally a foodies' paradise. The Agora has been the main source point of herbs and spices, fruit and vegetables, even fresh fish since 1913 for both locals and visitors.

The buildings that once housed the tanneries are left in the area almost intact. Only time has been allowed to leave its marks on the buildings and has turned them into backdrops and canvases for the local photographs. The area holds a mystic sense of bygone times and although many of the buildings which worked as tanneries now look like ruins, there is surely more than meets the eye. Walking around Tabakaria feels like a journey back in time with a true nostalgic charm.
