Drinks & Nightlife

Young & Jackson has got lots of history, lots of beer, & Chloe, scandalously naked, on level one. There are basic counter meals, elegant chaise lounge spaciousness upstairs, & a loud rooftop bar.

The entry is most uninviting, but soldier on. Once upstairs and on the deck, the view is exquisite, the decor full blown and very well done kitsch, and the cocktail list long and lovely.

Rumrum backwards, Murmur is up some excellent stairs that open into a very well restored & rustic chic warehouse, with cracked leather couches and oversized chandeliers. Long drinks list, great tapas.

Upstairs overlooking Centre Place, a turntable on high rotation (depending on the barman) and snazzy cocktails make it an ace bar for an early evening drink in the thick of Melbourne.

Food Scene

Pellegrini's opened on Bourke Street in 1954 & hasn't changed since. Paul has been making the coffee for 38 years (I remember him from my visits as a child) and Maria is still cooking reliable pasta.

The iconic Melbourne Laneway Café. There are red leather drop-down theatre seats, a long bench at the window, crowded outdoor tables and very hipster staff. Excellent coffee, excellent vibe.

It's just down the stairs from the apartment, in the Subway Underpass, built for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Excellent take away coffee. Check out the art gallery along the arcade whist you wait.

Chin Chin arrived in Melbourne 4 years ago & has buzzed ever since. They don't take bookings & the queue can be very long, but the ambiance, the video wall & the complex Asian flavours are worth it.

Diagonally opposite the apartment, Taxi Kitchen (formerly Taxi Dining Room) is less heavy linen luxury these days, but magnificent location and snappy food.

There are three Movida's in the city, but the original Hosier Lane one is the best. It's opposite Federation Square and is very hard to get into, but do try. Spanish tapas, good wine, great service.

Cumulus Inc is very cool. The staff are cool, the styling is cool, the location is cool and the view out is cool. You're in Melbourne, you should go to Cumulus Inc.

Flower Drum is regularly booked out months in advance, and is apparently in the top 50 restaurants in the world. I've been once. Save up.
