A well known restaurant serving “New American” cuisine, this is one of NYC’s best restaurants (in our opinion) and a great spot for a delicious, romantic meal. It’s in Vinegar Hill -- a sub-section of Dumbo that was once a Belgian-dominated port village serving the Navy Yard. The restaurant stays true to it’s roots and the ambiance is cozy and vintage. It’s a little on the pricey side, but we can’t recommend it highly enough. We also recommend making a reservation.

This place is across from a much fancier taco establishment, but if you’re looking for fresh and delicious authentic Mexican food with no pretense (and a low price), check out the hole in the wall with the yellow awning. Despite its name, we recommend the tacos.

Is it a general store? Market? Bodega? We’re not sure what to call it, but if there’s an ingredient in a recipe and we don’t know where to get it, we check Sahadi’s. Worth walking through just to get inspired about what you might be able to find on Atlantic Avenue or Smith Street. This is a historically Middle Eastern part of Brooklyn, and one whiff of the fine foods served up at Sahadi’s will transport you halfway across the world. This is a great spot to pick up supplies for a picnic.

Located on the far South-East corner of Fort Greene park, Walter’s is a great place for any meal but especially if you are looking for brunch. It’s typical of the “new” Brooklyn--hip and trendy, in a vintage-y way, serving up great American classics with a fresh twist.

A small, adorable Italian restaurant that manages to serve us delicious food in a casual but intimate setting. This is also really close to the Brooklyn Heights promenade - we’d recommend making an evening of it!

Good Mexican food served in a lively restaurant with killer drinks. It sits beneath the Brooklyn Bridge and has a great back garden. Wait times can be long during prime dining hours, so we recommend either making a recommendation or being willing to hang and drink at the bar for a while.

A new, swanky Italian restaurant right on the waterfront, with great outdoor seating and amazing views of Manhattan. Truth be told, we haven’t eaten here since it opened only recently. But we’ve heard good things (check out the NYTimes review).

Drinks & Nightlife

A few blocks from Concord Street is the tasting room for the King’s County distillery--the NYC's oldest continuously operating whiskey distillery. A beautiful space with a charming outdoor segment, they only serve whisky cocktails but the cocktails are really well made and the bar itself is something of an undiscovered gem. A perfect low-key hang out for groups, and a great way to enjoy the outside when the weather's nice. On the weekends, they have artisanal food trucks parked outside for snacks.

Calling this a brewpub with a rotating food selection sells this place short. It’s run by a master brewer and the beers they have on tap are some of the most interesting, diverse and delicious I’ve had. They also have a great outside garden.

Parks & Nature

There are closer parks, but none quite as charming as Fort Greene park. There is a farmer’s market on Saturday and everyday features a mix of the different people that call Brooklyn home. Bring a blanket and watch young families, young hipsters, old families and old hipsters explore the New York version of the great outdoors.

Sightseeing

Former shipping piers have been turned into sports fields, green spaces and picnic areas in this beautiful park located right on the water. It features AMAZING views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty as well as a carousel! You can catch the ferry here and ride over to Manhattan, up to different neighborhoods in Brooklyn (like Williamsburg and Greenpoint), or over to Governor’s Island. This park is our favorite in all of Brooklyn, and is a real urban planning success story.
