Food Scene

A relatively new Lebanese restaurant in a beautiful space, ultra-hip and popular, Suraya is bringing more and more foodies to Fishtown. Reservations recommended - they are constantly busy!
This beautifully restored building was not long ago one of the many dilapidated, empty brick warehouses along Front St., under the El (the Market-Frankford subway line.) I saw the restoration happen and the result is gorgeous! The food is also excellent.

This mainstay of South Kensington is a favorite Mexican restaurant of neighbors. Friendly, fast and great food!

La Colombe, Philadelphia's well-known coffee roasters, opened their flagship space on Frankford Ave. in Fishtown a few years ago. It is more that just a much-needed coffee spot but a beautifully restored space that has become a local hot spot. In addition to coffee they have great food, and they make their own rum! Wow. A great place to hang out, see and be seen, or just get a good cup of coffee.

Ramen noodles are a hot food specialty that I love. Chue on Frankford Ave. is small but excellent.

Neighborhoods

Old City is a 20 - 30 minute walk south through Northern Liberties. It is the oldest part of the city, where great old cobblestone streets, coffee shops, boutiques, galleries, museums and restaurants co-mingle. Also the Betsy Ross house, Independence Hall, and the Liberty Bell to satisfy your inner tourist!

Fishtown has taken off in the past 5-6 years becoming "the" hipster neighborhood, attracting businesses, restaurants, developers and young families to jostle for a chance to see and be seen. There is tremendous growth (construction everywhere) so walking, biking, and car services are recommended over tying to find parking.

Just south of South Kensington is Northern Liberties, an area that has seen massive growth in the past 15 years and which developers continue to vie for any space to build on. Still some great venues, restaurants and shops to check out. The best part of Northern Liberties are the small streets with wonderful old row homes that remain un-marred by development.

South Kensington, also known by the name Olde Kensington, is the neighborhood I have called home for 15 years. I moved here because of the open space and access to my studio in the Crane Arts Building on nearby North American St. As growth moves north and west from Northern Liberties, a lot of the empty spaces are being built on. Thousands of homes and condos have been built anew, or inside warehouses that have sat empty for years. Once the manufacturing center of Philly, 50 - 75 years ago the area was abandoned by the that sector, creating white flight and urban blight. The area is now an eclectic mix of long-time homeowners who built lives here, artists, and young people just starting out. The area is undergoing severe gentrification as the new homes are pricing out many. More arts organizations are moving to North American Street, all commercially zoned, as other areas price them out. South Kensington is a great area to see the way in which artists move to a neighborhood that is then ruined by followers looking for the next "artsy", funky or hip area. But it is the long-time residents, the diverse population, and the city vibe that still make South Kensington a great neighborhood!
