National Trust owned Jacobean country house and gardens at Chastleton near Moreton-in-Marsh (which you can reach by train from Charlbury). It is famous for a wife bravely saving her husband during the Civil War, by drugging the Roundhead soldiers looking for him. As well as having been "Wolf Hall" in the TV series.

Also famous for having inspired Nancy Mitford's semi-autobiographical novels Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love when she lived at Asthall Manor as a young woman. The Mitford family lived here from 1919-1926 before moving to Swinbrook down the road, where she was buried.

Moreton-in-Marsh inspired the fantasy world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, who was a regular visitor. Moreton is thought to be Bree in Lord of the Rings and The Bell Inn in the heart of the town is the inspiration for The Prancing Pony. The Four Shire Stone (Three Farthing Stone), The Rollright Stones (Barrow Downs) and Broadway Tower (Amon Hen) are all only a few miles from Moreton
