Cheap and cheerful caff just round the corner. Open 7.30am for breakfast. Try their Scottish bacon and haggis rolls. A heart attack in a bun!

One of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh, the Golf Tavern was founded in 1456. This buzzing links-side pub serves up cask ales and pub grub on rustic wood tables. There is an 18 hole pitch and putt on the Links, and Golf Clubs can be rented for a £5 deposit. Only open during summer it's really good fun, and adds an extra element to a pretty normal pub day out!

This handy family-run fruit shop and deli is just around the corner in Marchmont Road. Fruit is collected daily from early morning markets in Glasgow. Get some of their French bread if you're early enough.

This is the closest open green space to the flat. Good for picnics, a shortcut to the city centre, and for observing flocks of itinerant students as they migrate between various university habitats.

Just a 15 minute stroll from the flat, Blackford Hill is an interesting volcanic plug, while the adjoining Hermitage, the remnants of glacial erosion, is a lovely wooded valley, Take some bread along to the duck pond beside the entrance (see map).

A large open park in the centre of the city behind Holyrood Palace, it provides excellent views from the top. For the less energetic, you can drive half way up around the hill on Queen's Drive to the car park at Dunsapie Loch..

This is a small park at the East End of Princes Street, best accessed from Blenheim Place or Regent Terrace. It is the site of various monuments including one to Nelson in the shape of a telescope, and an old observatory, There are good views of the city and over the Forth Estuary. This is a favourite early morning walk of ours, as we can park in Regent Terrace until the Blue Meanies arrive at 0830.

This is a favourite early morning walk of ours, as we can park in Regent Terrace until the Blue Meanies arrive at 0830.
A little known access point for a walk along the Water of Leith. Park behind the big abandoned Redhall House. Go north towards Leith or south towards the Pentland Hills, and forget you are in the middle of a city.
