The earliest part of Mills Cottage dates back to c.1843, making it possibly one of Victoria’s oldest homes. Further sections were added on through the rest of the 1840s, displaying a range of building techniques from the period. The house was first occupied by John Brabyn Mills and his brother Charles Fredrick and from the mid 1850s-1871 Captain John Mills, the Port Fairy Harbour Master occupied the house. These long rolling waves leave plenty of time for you to steady yourself, pop up and practice your technique. If you need some pointers, you’ll be in safe hands with Go Surf School. The beach is perfectly located in the seaside town and you won’t even have to cross the river to get a bite to eat. East Beach is patrolled right through summer and you’ll find toilets and showers at the beach.

Sightseeing

The largest and most picturesque falls on the Hopkins River, Hopkins Falls are set against lush dairy country. The falls are among Victoria's widest at an impressive 90 metres with excellent views to be had at either the viewing platform or at the foot of the falls. They make an ideal picnic, fishing and walking spot, with gas BBQs and toilets provided. Best viewed in winter or after heavy rainfall, they falls are not without their charms in the warmer months. For a few days each summer baby eels migrate upstream and over the falls in one of the great natural phenomena, so keep your eyes open.

Since 1859, the Griffiths Island Lighthouse it has faithfully guided ship into the security of historic Port Fairy located on the Moyne River. It is located at the end of very scenic 400 metres walk across the island. The Griffiths Island Lighthouse was built in 1859 by Scottish stonemasons out of bluestone. The unique stairway is cut with each step being inserted in the next course of stone in the outside wall. Originally located on an area known as Rabbit Island, the island has since been encompassed by the neighbouring Griffiths Island. Originally a whaling port, historic Port Fairy was a major point of entry for immigrants and trading in Victoria last century. Up to the 1980s it was considered have one of Australia’s largest fishing fleets. The last lighthouse keeper that lived on the island was there from 1929 till 1954. There was one more lightkeeper for a short time before the light was automated.
