Jessica's favourite pubs and places for coffee
My favourite eating and drinking places, either within walking or a 15 mins drive
A 15 minute walk from the house, The Harrow Inn is a local institution and pretty uniquely unchanged - the loos are still outside in a separate building.
The Harrow is wonderful on a sunny day, when you can either sit outside to the front and enjoy everyone coming and going, or in the lovely cottage garden. In winter, there is a huge fire in one of the two small bars, but only enough space for about 12 to sit. Food choices are very limited but gargantuan potions and all homemade. Dogs are welcome, but children cant go inside.
The Harrow is run by two sisters Claire and Nisa McCutcheon, who were born and brought up there.
When their mother Ellen died, her obituary was written up in the Telegraph. It has been included in the Good Pub Guide every year since the guide was first published, receiving a unique long-service award in 2002. The Harrow was named as "Unspoilt Pub of the Year" in the 2018 Good Pub Guide

If possible, walk to The Hawkley across the Hangars - it takes about 90 mins, but it's worth every heave up the Shoulder of Mutton when you get there! If not, wiggle through the lanes to get there... I'll try and direct you. Wonderful pub with really fantastic food - gets very busy so book a table.

I am biased because I used to work there, but One Tree Books is a great place - an independent book shop which also has a great cafe, it is owned and run by Tim O'Kelly and won 'Independent Bookseller of the Year' in 2010. The staff helpful and knowledgeable and the atmosphere is great,. Lots of books on the local area. The cafe is run by the wonderful Judy Entress and is staffed by very helpful and friendly people too!
