In the city centre you will find the old Abbey which is definitely worth a visit. Franciscan monks established the abbey back in 1267. The Abbey today hosts a museum and has beautiful rose gardens and surroundings.

Very close to the house on Stickgatan is the “Charlotte Berlin’s museum” – an old, largely intact house dating back to the 19th century where visitors are given an insight into Charlotte’s life (1841-1916). Charlotte was a prominent Swedish business woman.

The beach of Ystad – along the beachline you will find great beaches and with a nice walkway with some nice spots, e.g. the hotel Ystad Saltsjöbad (nice bar and restaurant), Shuffle Bar, Fritidsbaren (best Danish pastries ever!)

Saint Mary’s church – Built around 1200 this is biggest and most central church in Ystad which has played a central role in the history in Ystad. As the only city in the world, Ystad still has a tower watchman who sits in the tower of the church each night and blows his copper horn every 15 min between 9.15 pm-1am, signaling that everything is safe in the city.

Wallander – as you might know, Ystad is the home town (lived on Mariagatan among other places) of the fictive character Kurt Wallander, a Swedish policeman. If you are interested it’s possible to get guided Wallander tours.

Ale stenar – approx. 30 min along the east coast line you will find the Ale’s Stones which is a mystical monument consisting of 59 massive stones arranged in an oval (a Swedish twist of Stonehedge). The monument was erected around 1 400 years ago in the iron age but still, it’s unclear by whom or why. The site also has magnificent views of the coastline and is located in a small fishing village, Kåseberga.
