The Arco Scoppa was originally built in wood and only later, in 1750, was it transformed into stone. Even today, the arch is a symbol to admire and during a walk in the historic center you can see it in all its charm. The color of the arch contrasts with the candid white of the city, however it harmonises with the context and stands out between the walls in which it is placed. Perfect as a backdrop for a selfie, the structure is located in Largo Trinchera, one of the most beautiful squares in the city, and connects the Palazzo del Seminario to the Episcopal one. The arch is located in front of the cathedral The Arco Scoppa is therefore located in front of the Cathedral of Ostuni and the wooden structure was replaced with a stone one in 1750 because it was considered fragile. Cardinal Scoppa himself ordered the transformation. Evidence of the transformation is a Latin inscription affixed to the arch which states that it was originally built in wood and that it was then Scoppa who wanted it in masonry to ensure safe transit on the arch. Canon Cesi placed the inscription in 1750. Known as the Loggia, the construction was inspired by the Bridge of Sighs in Venice.

The beautiful fifteenth-century Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria dell’Assunción, a national monument since 1902, which stands on the top of the highest hill in the white city, lies in the historic center of Ostuni. Renovated in the late fifteenth century, after a strong earthquake, the Cathedral has a majestic facade with three portals, surmounted by three rose windows, including the central one, a triumph of medieval symbolism, with 24 rays formed by columns and arches and the figure in the center. of Christ, surrounded by the apostles and seven heads of cherubs, holding the earth as a sign of protection.
