Fortified settlement proto-history consisting of three lines of walls, denoting various stages of construction. It was occupied in the Chalcolithic, in the 3rd century BC; then, continuously, from the 5th century BC to the 5th century\/VI century ad; and later, from the 12th century to the 14th century, when it was built a small castle.
Along with Neiva castle, this fort hill played a major role in the social and political development of this region. Apart from its heritage interest, it is also a wonderful viewpoint of the region, offering a view over Cávado river and the coastline plain.

The city of Guimarães has a significant historical importance due to the role it played in the foundation of Portugal. The city is often referred to as the "birthplace of the Portuguese nationality" or "the cradle city".
It's historical core was proclaimed a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Guimarães, along with Maribor, Slovenia, was the European Capital of Culture in 2012 and was elected by the New York Times one of the 41 places to go in 2011 and called it one of the Iberian peninsula's emerging cultural spots.
