Triopetra is located about 52km south of Rethymno and 13km southeast of the village Akoumia, at the foot of the mountain Siderotas. It can be accessed by car, through paved roads that start either from Akoumia or Sachtouria. Triopetra lies in the central part of a long beachfront, called Akoumiani Gialia, (i.e. Akoumia Beach). This is named like this because the wider area of Triopetra was once the winter sheter of Akoumia village residents, who had built small cottages to spend the night near their olive groves. Today the land is still owned mostly by the residents of Akoumia and thus, most, hotel owners originate from the same village. Triopetra consists of two beaches, which are separated by a small peninsula. At the edge of the peninsula, in the sea, three majestic rocks rise. Triopetra is named after these rocks, since it means “Three Rocks”.

Kedrodasos (i.e. juniper wood) is an amazing beach, located 76km southwest of Chania and 1km east of the famous Elafonissi lagoon. The beach is full with juniper trees (mistakenly confused with cedars) and sanddunes. These are the small twisted junipers (juniper species are Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa and Juniperus phoenicea). If you ever visit the beach, you should note that the trees are very fragile and need respect. The "cedar" grove covers a big area of about 11 hectares and is a magnificent place. It is a wonderful choice for swimming and a favorite beach for naturists. It is a very nice beach with white sand and some smooth and flat rocks in places. Fortunately, there are no facilities nearby, making this secluded beach, one of the latest untouched paradises in Europe. Moreover, since the beach is secluded, you should keep it clean and not littered. The beach is protected to some point from the winds that usually blow in the neighboring Elafonissos. The European path E4 crosses the beach (there are yellow and black signs on the way).

Kalyves is a seaside resort located 19km west of Chania, on the south coast of Souda Bay. This picturesque village is built on a fertile green valley, where several rivers flow. The village's name (i.e. “Huts” in Greece) seems to come after the primitive huts that were built by farmers in their fields, to spend the summer nights. Near the village, on its east side, flow the rivers of Xidas and Mesopotamos. Moreover, the several springs inside the sea, combined with the rivers, decrease the sea temperature. East and west of the river Xidas, two sandy beaches with shallow water are formed, open to north winds. Xidas and Maistrali beaches, as they are called respectively, are very well organised and all common tourist facilities and services are provided there.

Georgioupolis is a seaside resort located 38km east of Chania and 21km west of Rethymnon. It is a small coastal town, situated in a lush valley filled with rivers and springs. The town lies on the western edge of a vast long beach with 10km length. Georgioupolis beach stretches 2km to the east, starting from the river Almiros and ending in Kavros beach, which is a natural extension of the first beach. Georgioupolis beach is sandy with dunes in places and shallow waters. It is very well organized with lifeguards and is ideal for children. However, if it is windy, high attention is required because of the sea currents. Umbrellas, showers, food and drinks are available on the beach. 700m east of the port, the beach "breaks" into two parts, because of the river Perastikos. From there, the beach continues to the east with greater width.

Crete's mountains are cut by deep gorges, the longest of which is the 18-kilometer Samaria. It makes a challenging hike, which you can do independently or as part of an organized day trip from Chania. This is a one-way hike, so you need to consider transport back to your starting point before doing this hike. It can be complex, so a tour is your best option. Entrance to the gorge is at the village of Omalós, 42 kilometers south of Chania.

ake Kournas is the largest natural lake in Crete and is located in an enchanting landscape, between the west slopes of the White Mountains and the fertile plane of Georgioupolis. It is located near the village Kournas, 2.5km south of the beach of Georgioupolis, 43km east of Chania and 20km west of Rethymnon. Lake Kournas and its surroundings constitute a very important ecosystem for Greece, as the wider area of Apokoronas is one of the very few areas of Crete where plenty of fresh water is stored throughout the year. The name Kournas is believed to come from the Arabic word kurna for "lake" or "bath". In ancient manuscripts it is mentioned as Korissia, while it is believed that the area hosted a sanctuary dedicated to Korissia Athena.

The monastery of Agia Triada of Tzagarolon is one of the richest and most beautiful monasteries in Crete. It is built near the airport of Chania, in the position Tzobomylos of the Cape Melecha and at the foothills of Stavros Mount. The distance from Chania is only 15km. The monastery was built by the Venetian nobles Jeremiah and Lawrence Tzagarolo. Jeremiah was a famous scholar of his era with rich education and was a friend of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Meletios Pigas. Jeremiah himself was a candidate for Patriarch of Constantinople. Moreover, Jeremiah designed and built the monastery complex of the monastery, being affected by the architect Sebastiano Serlio from Verona, Italy. The monastery today hosts a small museum with various pictures and icons. The most important are the 12th century cloth for covering the altar, the icons of St. John the Theologian (16th century), St. Nicholas (17th century) and the icons of the painter Skordilis: the Enthroned Christ, Living Spring and the Second Coming (1635-1645).

Aradena is one of the most interesting gorges and one of the longest ones (15km long). The old Sfakians called it Faragas (Huge gorge) due to its size, to discern it from the rest gorges of Sfakia. This characterization was later falsely used for Samaria Gorge. The gorge actually starts from the root of the peak Thodoris of White Mounts, and specifically from the underground stream of cave Drakolakki. However, most people think that it is only 7km long, because the easiest way is to reach it from Aradena village, at the middle of the gorge length. Aradena bridge Aradena bridge In order to reach it from Chora Sfakion, you walk the carriageway up to the mountain village of Anopoli (12 km, at an altitude of 600 m), built on the southern side of the foot of the White Mountains. You then walk another 3,5 km to reach the village of Aradena (at an altitude of 520 m), built on the brink of the gorge and deserted after a vendetta. The ancient city of Aradin used to be there.

Chania's history dates back millennia to somewhere around 2200 BC, when the Minoans founded the ancient city-state of Kydonia on this same spot. Housed in the Gothic Church of San Francesco, a light and airy vaulted space (built by the Venetians and later used as a mosque by Turks), this museum holds archeological finds from western Crete dating from Neolithic times through to the Roman era.

The ancient town of Falasarna (or Phalasarna) is located at the west base of the peninsula Gramvousa and was one of the major towns of Crete during the Hellenistic Era. The city was famous for its port, the only natural harbor in western Crete, built in a small lagoon. In antiquity it was called Korikos, while the name Falasarna was possibly taken after the local nymph Falasarni. The opponent town in the region was that of Polirinia, which managed to turn Falasarna to its port after 100 years of conflicts (186BC). In Falasarna the archaeologists have identified parts of buildings and the acropolis overlooking the harbor with traces of strong walls. Moreover, east of the port a cemetery with 43 archaic graves has been found. The territory of Falasarna extended up to the tip of the peninsula of Gramvousa, where there was a temple. Also, a carved throne has been found within walking distance from the town, which was probably dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon, or was simply throne for speakers.

The museum exhibition has 18 visitable stations with authentic exhibits, presumptions of great historical value and rich supervisory material. Six rooms are maintained exactly as they were handed over to the National Foundation "Eleftherios K. Venizelos" by the Venizelos family and to a large extent as it was when he lived here (entrance corridor, living room, political office, dining room, personal office and Venizelos bedroom) . The smokehouse, which was destroyed during World War II, was rebuilt based on a 1927 plan and houses rare editions from Eleftherios Venizelos' personal library. The ground floor service room remains in the form (with murals) given to it during the German Occupation. In the corridors of the floors there is supervisory material for the Venizelos family, the house of Halepa and the other houses, where the great politician lived, while a room on the first floor is dedicated to Elena Venizelou. In five rooms on the first floor and the attic-patio, the action of Venizelos is presented, divided into the thematic "The Revolutionary", "The Politician", "The Diplomat", "The Man", "The Myth". Finally, the assassination attempts against Venizelos in 1920 and 1933 are presented in two rooms.

Ancient Lissos was the seaport of Elyros and was built in a small valley between ancient Syia (current Sougia) and Paleochora. It flourished from the Hellenistic period up to the 9th century, when it was destroyed by the Saracens. It was famous for the Asclepion, where patients from all over the island arrived to be healed from the thermal baths. You can still see the mosaic floors of the temple of Asclepius with depictions of animals, which was destroyed by an earthquake. A walk in the valley of Lissos will impress you, as the area is dispersed with ancient ruins, such as pillars, building bases and pieces of marble. You will see the Roman necropolis with vaulted tombs and ruins of the Roman theater. The area hosted dozens of statues and coins of Lissos, indicating that Lissos was one of the most powerful towns in Crete. The most important statues were these of Goddess of Health (Hygeia), Asclepius and Pluto, that can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Chania.
