Food scene

Silver Gulch is a local brewery where locals go for a wide selection of brews as well as tasty food, just north of Fairbanks in Fox. We also recommend it to our winter guests who are seeking aurora views. Go get a good dinner and then head north on the Steese Hiway towards Circle to Cleary Summit and enjoy a great big sky view of aurora and mountains.

A favorite of many locals in the heart of downtown, along the Chena River. It is a higher end restaurant $$$ and sure to please the discerning palette, along with the full dining experience of appetizers, wine, cocktails, and desserts. Great place for special occasions!

Delicious dinner in the summer, with outdoor seating. Quite spendy but we splurge once or twice a season. Also many attractions at Pioneer Park on the same property. Gift shops, historic buildings, theaters.

Hot Springs

This is a great resort, historic, with natural hot springs, and delicious food and full bar.
This is a favorite destination with much to offer locals and visitors. You can soak in the natural hot springs when it’s -20 and have your hair frosted and watching the aurora dance across the sky if you are lucky. There is also an “Ice Palace”, thermal greenhouses, dog sledding, skiing trails and skating rink. This is a beautiful scenic one hour drive from our “Little House”. Be cautious in snow storm conditions tho, it would not be advised.

Sightseeing

While the aurora is viewable from the deck of our “Little House”, we also suggest this sight for a huge sky perspective. It is at the top of a pass and get the grandeur view of a vast northward view of more hills and mountains beyond. On the summer solstice you can continue north toward Circle to Eagle Summit, and see the sun not set at about 2:00 a.m.

Places of interest

The University is a hub of the community. Many concerts, festivals, galleries, and an outstanding museum can be found at UAF. A popular winter novelty is the time and temperature sign. Many hardy souls like to make a special photo op in tropical attire when it “flashes” -40 degrees. The sign is at the bottom of the hill at the corner of University Ave and College Rd. The Musk Ox Farm is off of Yankovich Road, with a parking area alongside the fields where Musk ox can be seen. They also offer visits to the farm. UAF property also has miles of cross country trails which can be enjoyed in winter and as hiking trails in the summer.

Get a great overview of all of the diverse regions of Alaska, artifacts, art, gifts and books. Also what comes free; There is no better view of the entire Tanana Valley, Fairbanks, Mt. Denali and all of the Alaska Range than from the top of the “ridge” where the museum sits.

If you are heading South on the Richardson Highway, this place is a must stop. It is so easy to just drive by on the highway, except for the interesting “giant knotty mosquito” on the front lawn. Be sure to stop in. It’s our must stop for ice cream on our way to and from all points south. But even in the winter it’s worth the stop for a hot drink, large variety of local gifts and souvenirs, and the surprising and free incredible variety of native species of mounted birds and wild animals in museum like displays. The locally crafted gifts made from natural tree “burls” is its claim time fame. The knotty animal yard displays make great selfie props! Don’t miss it.
