The Antarctic Centre near the airport is a fascinating trip. NZ manages Scott Base in Antarctica and you will learn all about the continent in a fun (and cold) way.

This is an interesting tale of the Church deciding to demolish their building that was severely damaged and the city residents demanding it be fixed .... The Anglican Church decided to demolish the building and replace it with a new structure, but various groups opposed the church's intentions, with actions including taking a case to court. In the meantime a Cardboard Cathedral was built on the edge of Latimer Square and is well worth a visit. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/sep/17/temporary-cardboard-cathedral-ruin Read more.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChristChurch_Cathedral

The area alongside the Avon River was badly damaged in many areas of the City. Currently it is classed as a redzone. Houses were demolished. People were moved away and it is a "waste zone" in many areas. It is interesting to walk along the river walk and learn a bit more about the affect the earthquake had on the people that used to live there. https://ccc.govt.nz/parks-and-gardens/explore-parks/waterways/avon-river/te-ara-trail
