The Calumet Theatre is supposed to be an acoustically perfect stage. While we've never seen a musical performance here (there are many!), we love the $1 movies in the summer, always featuring late run or classic kids' movies.

This little museum is perfect on a rainy day or when your kids refuse any more hikes. Rocks from all over the world, but with an especially impressive display of Keweenaw geology. The gift shop is pretty awesome, too!

Beaches

A sandy, warm bay on the opposite side of the peninsula from Eagle Harbor. The beach is usually less crowded, and the water a little warmer than here in town.

An inland lake with warm water and a soft bottom. Great for fishing, for hanging with little ones, or for actually swimming because the big lake is too cold.

A huge bay made out of sand dunes that you can see from space. The water is shallow for a long way out, and it often gets waves big enough to jump. When the lake is high, there's not much beach, but you'll be in the water anyways.

Hiking

An easy, unmarked hike to a gorgeous waterfall in the woods that you can splash around in. You can do a longer loop of a few miles around all the falls, or just walk the half-mile to the upper falls, which are the most dramatic. If you get Hungarian Falls on your map app, you'll get to the closest road. Where you see all the cars parked, head into the woods (there is a trail, never fear, it's just not marked).

An easy hike through the woods leads you to a rocky beach—perfect for rock and agate hunting, or for scrambling around ancient volcanic cliffs. If you happen to be passing through at the right time, you'll find wild blueberries and huckleberries lining your path to the harbor.

This is a favorite hike for kids and those for whom walking is a little more difficult. Although it used to be isolated, you can now drive to the trailhead and walk on well maintained trails on the island/peninsula at the mouth of Copper Harbor.

This nature preserve loops all around Bete Grise. Two of our favorite hikes: The Bare Bluff hike is a moderately difficult hike over a forested hill, with gorgeous views of Bete Grise and the south side of the peninsula. The Botany Trail is an easy stroll through dunes and marsh, bringing you to a secluded, sandy beach. Our kids' favorite beach.

No one actually calls this Mount Lookout—this is Mt. Baldy, the hike in our backyard. There is a parking area by the firehouse, but if you've got 4WD, drive farther in; the first few miles are flat, sandy, hot, and not that interesting. The good part of the hike starts when you get to the gate (which is really just a few metal poles). From here, it's a moderately strenuous hike, past the false summit to the top of Baldy. In mid-to-late summer, the summit is covered in blueberries, and the trail is peppered with bear and big cat scat. We hike up Baldy at least once a visit.

Gorgeous, easy-to-moderate hike through the woods above Eagle Harbor's monastery (yup, a monastery). It loops past a fish pond, mine ruins, contemplation benches, and if you are feeling hearty, you can follow the trail all the way to Jacob's Falls.

The best food in the Keweenaw. It's spendy, but worth it. When there's not a pandemic, you typically need a reservation to get a table, but you can also always get your food and drinks to go and sit on their desk right on Lake Superior. Perfect at sunset (or anytime, really). We love their pulled pork, brisket, and brussel sprout salad. And their cocktails. Seriously delicious.

The first microbrewery in the Keweenaw. While they don't serve food, they have a binder full of menus from all the local eateries that deliver to their taproom. We like to end a day at Mont Ripley here, ordering pizza for the kids and a few Widowmakers for Mom and Dad.

The owner, Stacey, is turning Copper Harbor's tiny store into a legit one-shop stop. While her inventory is limited, you can find fishing supplies, food, basic outdoor gear, great spirits and alcohol. When possible, she sources from local producers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she encourages calling ahead to place an order, although there still is in-person, masked shopping. She delivers to Eagle Harbor once a week.

Brockway is gorgeous any time of day, but we especially recommend a ride up here for sunset or for stargazing—Brockway Mountain has been recognized as one of the best places for stargazing in the United States, thanks to the lack of light or environmental pollution. Bring a sweater—it's windy up here! Also, if you're driving between Eagle and Copper Harbors, it's the only place you get cell service.
