Neighbourhoods

The harbour area and seafront are the busiest areas in Torbay (also known as the English Riviera). With lots of bars and restaurants to choose from it can be quite lively later. A good place to find boat trips along the coast to Brixham and Dartmouth.

Sightseeing

A great day out can be had with Dartmouth Steam Railway. The round robin ticket will take from Paignton to Kingswear then a boat from Dartmouth to Totnes and then a double decker bus back to Paignton. It is a full day out and is affected by tides, so best book ahead.

Picture postcard country village a short distance in land from Livermead Beach. From Bayview there is a circular walk starting at Scadson Woods taking over the rolling hills and descending past ornamental ponds before arriving at the Manor House and thatched village with pub and water mill.

Swimming

A quiet beach popular with locals. A mixture of pebbles and sand depending on recent conditions. Great rock pools at low tide. Good beach cafe. Best swimming is at hight tide. Jumping off the slipway at hight tide was part of my and many others child hood. Good diving and snorkelling. Strong swimmers can go around Shag Rock - but make sure you have support and know what you are doing. No strong currents at the cafe end of the beach but can be rough n strong southerly winds. It was the first beach in Britain where men and women were allowed to bathe together. Above the beach is the Neo classical Osborne Terrace, once connect to the beach by a tunnel that can still be seen to this day.

Torbay (Torquay, Paignton and Brixham) has 22 miles of coastline and 20 beaches. The sea temperature at local spots in the right conditions can be over 20 deg during still warm weather. It doesnt usually drop below 12 degrees until after Christmas, which makes and ideal destination for keen open water swimmers. There are numerous informal and friendly 'wild swimming' groups that can be contacted via social media. Local swimmer and friend Matt Newbury and Sophie Pierce have written a book all about swimming in Torbay https://secretwildswims.wordpress.com
