Built in 1894, and opened a year later, the 658-foot-long Penarth Pier is reminiscent of more gentle times and is one of only two surviving pleasure piers in south Wales, the other being at Mumbles. It is a beautiful place to take a walk and enjoy the restaurants and bars on the esplanade and look out to beautiful seaviews and the beaches of south west England. The restored Penarth Pier Pavilion is open to the public and brings a unique facility to Penarth Esplanade as a multi-functional art and learning building. It boasts a 70 seater community cinema, arts, events and exhibition space, cafe, bar and restaurant and meeting spaces. From Penarth seafront and the Esplanade, it is only a short uphill walk back to the town centre where you will find a Victorian shopping arcade, a number of unique family-owned stores, as well as the usual popular high street names.

Heaneys opened at the end of 2018 in a spot that's been renowned for housing some of Cardiff's best restaurants, including Le Gallois and Arbennig. Heaneys, though, is arguably the best yet. Owner and chef Tommy Heaney became known around the UK after appearing on Great British Menu and anyone who walks past his floor-to-ceiling glass-fronted place can see the busy, buzzing atmosphere inside.
Home of the "unauthentic taco", this city-centre spot is one of the newest additions on the list. La Pantera was started by a group of friends who wanted to bring tacos and mezcal to Cardiff in a casual setting with an "informal attitude to service". It's quickly built up a cult-like following with their weekly menu changes and experimental flavours.

Located in a former bank vault, The Potted Pig focuses on great cooking and good gin. The Michelin Guide was impressed by its "robust, tasty dishes". There are decent vegetarian and fish options, but as the name suggests, it's carnivores who'll really be in their element here. There's a great evening atmosphere, a changing seasonal menu — and the show-stopping whole suckling pig.
