Central is one of our favorite BBQ spots in town. The Poplar location is very close to our house, but they have several locations throughout the city which could be more convenient if you're exploring the city. Memphis BBQ is known for its pork! So we recommend the pork nachos, dry ribs, or a sandwich/plate. They also have incredible smoked wings, try the sweet heat or honey gold flavors.

We love Uncle Lou's! Gus's Fried Chicken is also amazing but there's just something special about Uncle Lou's. There is a reason why Guy Fieri showcased it on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives! They have fantastic fried chicken and sides. The menu is diverse with sandwiches, wings, and burgers, but we always get the chicken. You can't go wrong with the Sweet and Spicy Love sauce. Also make sure to try their potato salad, honey biscuits, and dessert. General Advice: The restaurant is not in the best part of town, so we advise going for lunch and not dinner. They also do takeout and delivery, but it's not quite the same without Uncle Lou greeting you.

If you know fried chicken, you know Gus's. The Mendenhall location is the closest to our house, but they are located throughout the city, with the oldest one in Downtown. The menu is simple, fried chicken, in whatever quantity or white/dark meat. The sides are pretty good too, can't go wrong with potato salad or greens.

You won't find better donuts at these prices, trust us. There's a reason why locals love it. Also, it's open late for all of you night owls out there that enjoy sweets.

Fantastic museum with major historical significance given its location next to the Lorraine Motel, which is where the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by a gunman (whose identity is still contested - see the exhibit on it). Very powerful and moving, especially if you enjoy learning about modern American history, politics, and social change.

Historic and unique main drag for all types of debauchery! Fun for big groups or small, with bars, music venues, dance clubs, and quirky gift shops. The restaurants are okay but there are better places to eat in downtown. However, we love Dyer's, which is perfect if you want a burger and shake after a long night of partying. There are several blues clubs and live music venues. B.B King's and Tin Roof are favorite destinations. Also, the people watching here is top notch. You will always find some characters out there.

Shelby Farms is a huge outdoor nature preserve that is open to the public. It's a great place for picnics and enjoying the outdoors right here in the city. There are also biking and hiking trails scattered throughout in addition to a BMX course, horseback riding, fishing areas, playground, zipline/obstacle course, and much more. You can also rent kayaks, SUPs, and paddleboats. There is also a herd of bison that roams around that you can see from the different roads and trails. Overall, very cool and interesting outdoor space!

Safety and Security

Memphis is a fun city but it's important to be mindful of your surroundings when exploring and having fun. When driving and parking, keep valuables out of sight and locked away safely in your trunk or glovebox, and ALWAYS lock your car. Be aware of where you are in public. Try to park in public lots or well-lit areas. Downtown and midtown are mostly safe, but it never hurts to always be aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable about a person or place, it never hurts to leave. You may encounter panhandlers in the city, it is best if you leave them be.
