City/town information
Our county is home to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail located at Springer Mountain, stretching from Georgia to Maine. The A.T. is approximately 2,180 miles in length, making it one of the longest, footpaths in the world. The county has a deeply rooted relationship with the Cherokee & Crete Indians who were the first inhabitants of this incredibly beautiful area of the United States. We are the Apple Capital of Georgia producing over 600,000 bushels of apples each year in 22 varieties. There are seven main orchards surrounding the city of Ellijay. We are the Mountain Biking Capital of Georgia with over 100 miles of single-track mountain biking trails. Our county has numerous wineries and is known for its agri~tourism and spirit of adventure. We invite our residents to explore the many trails either on foot or bike! Two rivers merge in our historic downtown Ellijay forming a third river, which flows into Carter Lake the deepest lake east of the Mississippi. It is here that the adventurous enjoy kayaking, canoeing, tubing and stand up paddling.
