Hmm. Something about those rosemary potatoes smells and looks familiar. Cooks have been known to clip fresh rosemary from the hedge in front of the Captain Johnson house. Always with our blessing. An Italian treat.

OK, so maybe food “scene” isn’t the best description. But if a dark place with a sorta divey vibe doesn’t put you off, the breakfast and burgers are just what the Captain ordered. Also the Club House sandwich. Massive!

This is the oldest fish processing plant on the lower Columbia River though instead of housing the Bumble Bee plant, you’re more likely to see visitors sipping at Rogue Brewery. Before Captain Johnson lived in the home on Franklin, it housed the John Fox family. Fox started the Astoria Iron Works that created the machines for the canning industry. A wonderful, authentic complex with unique public restrooms.

Only movie magic could get kids on bikes from the Goonies house to Cannon Beach so fast. Parking can be a challenge in the summer but for visitors into movie lore, you’ll want to go. Less crowded is Indian Beach inside Ecola Park at the north end of town. By the way, the Goonies House is a private residence not open to visitors. You are asked to respect the owner’s privacy, though sadly many do not.

Come for the coffee, wander through history. The shop is located in what was the Bumble Bee cannery. Good brews, views, and eats. Plus you can visit the Hanthorn Cannery Museum where there are more connections to the Captain Johnson House. Before the Captain lived here, it was built for John Fox who helped begin the salmon canning industry in the late 1800’s. The Troyer Fox canning machine is among the displays.
