Great local stores and shopping

just steps from the house, Antique Row is the heart of a thriving commercial, artistic and residential neighborhood. Although known locally as “Antique Row,” a variety of shops and services now inhabit the historic structures along South Broadway. Just steps away from the front door! Antique Row merchants, many of whom have been in business 30 years or more, offer quality antiques, garden supplies, fine wines, antique rugs, handcrafted picture frames, tiles, vintage lighting, custom furniture craftsmen—as well as several dining establishments and a tea room.

People pour in from all over Denver for concerts at the massive four-year-old amphitheater, Levitt Pavilion. An older man, with a walker, ambles through a parking lot that has been shut off to traffic. Parents teach their children to ride their bikes in the empty lot; once they know how, they might join the daredevils zipping around the dirt mountain-bike course in warmer months. Skiers and sledders slide down the massive slope when it snows, kids play at the playground, and green thumbs from Moe’s southwest Denver neighborhood tend the community garden, growing new friendships along with plants.

Take a break from the busy downtown scene in lovely Washington Park - dubbed "Wash Park" by locals. The area has a Rockwellian feel, with its lush landscaping, awning-covered storefronts and family-friendly atmosphere. Washington Park itself has two lakes, two formal flower gardens, tree-lined paths and seemingly endless expanses of green grass. It's a fitness mecca for Denverites, and on any given day you're likely to spot people walking their dogs, running, biking, paddle boating or doing yoga.

Cultures blend in historic Five Points, one of Denver's oldest and most diverse neighborhoods. The district was known as the "Harlem of the West" because it was a frequent stop for jazz greats including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis, who played clubs like the Rossonian and the Rainbow Room. The neighborhood was also mentioned repeatedly in Jack Kerouac's "On the Road." Today, historic Five Points' creativity and vibrancy live on in a fascinating fusion of old and new. Visitors can stop in at innovative coffeehouses and craft breweries, visit museums telling stories from the past, experience live music from all genres at independent music venues or eat at beloved soul food and barbecue institutions.

City/town information

Visit Colorado's first capital city before Denver. Golden is a city and former gold rush town at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, in Colorado. Clear Creek Trail is a network of paths running along a waterway. It passes Clear Creek White Water Park, a kayaking course. The Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum has exhibits on earth science and mining history. Northeast is the Colorado Railroad Museum, with vintage trains and an 1800s-style railroad depot.

Once the third-largest town in Colorado, Georgetown is now home to slightly more than 1,000 residents. But on weekends, its capacity overflows with visitors who want to shop, sightsee, have lunch or spend the night at a Victorian bed-and-breakfast inn. You'll find artifacts from the era preserved at the Hotel de Paris, now a museum, and see how the well-to-do lived at the historic Hamill House Museum. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a major attraction here, and takes visitors on a round-trip narrow-gauge steam train ride from Georgetown to nearby Silver Plume and back, with an optional stop for a tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine. Back in Georgetown, the Capital Prize Mine takes you on a tour 1,000 feet underground.

Nature lovers and groups enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The trails range from .5 to 4 miles and can be combined for longer journeys. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, to be exact. Once serving as farmland to the early settlers, this huge tract of land to the city’s northeast (15,000 acres), has been conserved for wildlife. Prior to receiving that status in 1980, it had been used by Shell and the US Army for the production of chemicals, making it quite the rewilding success story. The mixture of prairie, woodland and wetland is home to American buffalo, coyotes and mule deer, among other wildlife. You might also get lucky and spot another North American natural icon, and USA’s national bird: the bald eagle.

Herman’s Hideaway is the brainchild of father and son duo Herman and Allan Roth. For 56 years and running, the former lounge has become of Denver’s premier music venues. Herman Roth bought Cunningham Lounge or what’s known now as Herman’s Hideaway back in 1962. It first served as a restaurant in the ’40s and 50’s before Herman made it a shot-and-beer joint. Today there are several shows a week in this popular venue 1 block from the house.

Traveling around Denver and surrounding areas

Public transportation is the cheapest way to get around Central Denver. There are close train stations and bus routes just steps from the home that will get you to all the best neighborhoods. However, if you wish to visit outside of central Denver, you will need to rent a car to visit the beautiful mountains and surrounding towns except for Boulder. You can reach Boulder (University of Colorado) by taking the bus from Union Station downtown. You can also reach historic Golden by light-rail train. You will still need to take a bus from Golden station to downtown. Worth the trip!

Ski like a local!

Instead of spending lots of money on staying in one of the Ski resorts, stay in Denver, and drive up to one of the close local ski mountains that Denver locals enjoy. Three local close favorites are Loveland Ski, Eldora, and Arapahoe Basin. Visit Liftopia online for discounted tickets.
Manières d'économiser

Skip the slopes and go snowshoeing!

Many come to Colorado for the great skiing which there are plenty, but few take advantage of the quiet beauty and serenity of snowshoeing. You can rent snowshoes from several places in Denver and drive up to great hikes in the nearby mountains for half the money and far fewer people. A few suggestions are Saint Mary's Glacier, Silver Dollar Lake, and Echo Park lake. Visit REI store downtown to rent gear.

Climb 13,000 Ft mountains and skip the 14,000 ones!

The mountains can get busy in the summertime and especially the 14,000 ft mountain hikes. If you are looking for great hikes, tranquility, and spectacular views, find trails that scale 13,000 peak mountains and avoid the 14 ones. You'll thank me for it!

Go East to the plains instead of West to the mountains!

The mountains are beautiful and you shouldn't skip them when visiting Colorado. But if you are looking for beautiful landscapes and charming towns off the beaten track, visit the Colorado plains. A few suggestions: Pawnee National Grasslands, Burlington CO, and Granada CO

Sample local beers

Denver is all about craft beers and the experimental flavors that distinguish these brews from your typical mass-produced beer. The city is stocked full of craft breweries, so there is no shortage of choice, but in LoDo, you’ll find a concentration of good places to visit. When the craft beer revolution started to take off, LoDo was at the center and Denver quickly came to be known as the ‘Napa Valley of Craft Beer’! Most brewpubs in the city offer tasters of the various ales, lagers and pilsners on sale, and a hearty meal for when hunger strikes. Each craft brewery has a different style tha

Close to Denver, visit Ride Colorado’s longest and fastest zipline, just 30 minutes from Denver! The ziplining course is nestled in the Rocky Mountains and will provide you with an amazing adventure! With an elevation of over 8,000 feet, the views are absolutely magical, but only if you remember to open your eyes. Fly at speeds of up to 50mph along a course of over 6,000 ft in length! Soar through pine forests and over mountain meadows. It is a fantastic way to enjoy some fresh air, see some magnificent Rocky Mountain views, and have a whole lot of fun.

Go up highway 285 and skip I70

I70 is the main thoroughfare to the mountains and can get congested with cars. I suggest driving up highway 285 instead and visit the towns and beautiful hikes. Because there isn't any ski resorts up this way, you avoid all the traffic. There still can be some, however.
