If you are visiting Peebles, it's well worth stopping off at Kailzie Garden. They also have the largest varieties of snowdrops in Scotland, it's like a sea of white with all the snowdrops in February. There's a little playpark for our younger guests too or you can stop by and use the fishery. There's a cafe on site too. https://www.kailziegardens.com/

Located in the hills of the Scottish Borders, near Peebles, 65-acre Dawyck enjoys an almost continental climate comprising warm dry summers followed by cold, snowy winters. The waterfall, one of the UK’s highest, plunges 60m down into the Moffat Water Valley. This dramatic upland landscape was created by glacial erosion over millions of years and unfolds further up steep slopes past the waterfall to picturesque Loch Skeen. Towering above the loch are the peaks of Lochcraig Head, Mid Craig and the summit of White Coomb (821m), with breathtaking views extending as far as the Lake District and Northumberland to the south. Grey Mare’s Tail is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, who come to see the rare upland plants, peregrine falcons, ring ouzels, feral goats and, if you’re lucky, ospreys fishing in the loch. Loch Skeen is also home to Britain’s rarest freshwater fish, the vendace. The area boasts a rich human history as well, dating back to at least the Iron Age. In the 17th century Covenanters used Watch Knowe as a lookout point in the valley to keep an eye out for government troops. https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/grey-mares-tail

A walk around Carmichael estate is fab, and very dog friendly. If you pop into the shop when you park up they will direct you to the different walks across the 2,400 acre estate. There are also two old unoccupied houses on the estate which are v grand and worth a walk to visit. The estate is a 5 min drive from the cottage. There’s also a café on site, dogs are welcome. They also have a farm shop on site with local produce, venison is their speciality. https://www.visitlanarkshire.com/things-to-see-and-do/walk-or-cycle-carmichael-estate-history-walking-route/

It is the second highest hill in the area and you can see it from the cottage. If you drive back onto the A73 and turn right towards Lanark. Follow the road for about 2 miles, after you pass thankerton turnoff on the right, keep going, and just at the bottom of the dip in the road (by tinto tearooms) turn left and you can park up there to start the walk. On a clear day you can see as far as the mountains in the highlands, over to Ayrshire and also to Edinburgh and as far south as the lake district. It can be really cold and windy at the top though, so check the weather before you set off. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/tinto.shtml

The town of Moffat is lovely place to visit, again lots of independent shops and places to eat out and a small play park and boating pond. If you park in the carpark (free to park) on your left as you enter the town from the M74, there’s a walk way by the river (it starts right beside the car park) and you can walk a fair distance along there. If you do visit Moffat, we normally drive down the M74, coming off at Junction 15, but you can drive back via Broughton, to Biggar and back to Symington. The views are absolutely stunning as the road takes you high into the hills. Also Moffat has a famous sweetie shop, the Moffat Toffee Shop https://www.moffattoffeeshop.com/ ...this is usually the carrot on the stick to get my children to do the longer walks! It really does bring back your childhood memories of sweetie shops though, and definitely worth visiting at the end of a long walk! Here is a link to some other walks in the area you may enjoy https://www.alltrails.com/scotland/dumfries-and-galloway/moffat

The Museum of Lead Mining in Wanlockhead (the highest village in Scotland) sits amidst the Lowther Hills, directly on the Southern Upland Way. The Museum is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Trustees dedicated to preserving the rich mining and social heritage and history of the area. Discover the 18th century lead mine where you will experience the thrill of going on the only underground mine tour in Scotland. Take a glimpse into the past by visiting the miners’ cottages and see how the miners and their families lived during the periods of 1750, 1850 & 1910. The Miners’ Library is one of three subscription libraries in Scotland set up by the miners themselves. Due to it’s significance the library has been given Recognised Collection Status by the Scottish Government. A fantastic display of minerals, gold, mining and local artefacts are found in our Visitor Centre, along with our gift shop and tearoom. During our open season (April - Oct) you can try your luck at finding your own gold. Yes! Real Gold! Our enthusiastic and friendly guides will teach you the basics of gold panning – you may just catch gold fever! Gold Panning Licenses are available from reception along with gold panning equipment for prospecting in the local streams.

The railway runs from Leadhills to Wanclockhead (the highest village in Scotland) and is run by volunteers. It is open from Easter to the end of Sept at weekends only. Please check the website before visiting to ensure that the train is operating. It's a lovely wee train ride, my children love it. And you can then visit the Lead mining museum in Wanlcokhead.

Lanark Loch is good for a shorter walk around the loch, there are a selection of activities to enjoy - through the summer months you can enjoy the loch side grass areas to relax while the children play within the play park as well as making use of the other small rides and minigolf on offer. There is a small kiosk, with a decked seating area and play park, which serves refreshments and snacks. If you are feeling energetic you can take a walk round the Loch.

A fantastic little museum on Biggar High Street with lots of local history and old shops that you can pop in and see what the town used to be like. It's very hands on and children will enjoy dressing up in old costumes, playing with old toys or working an old telephone exchange system. Lots of local history. We love popping in here on a rainy day.

A firm family favourite for us. You can enjoy a play in the adventure playground, a walk through the well kept grounds or a tour around the castle, or you could hit one of the mountain biking trails. If you need more advice, Rik’s bikes, based at the castle, will offer more advice. Hire of bikes available too. They do also have craft fair days and host the Galloway Fair which has seen great success (held end of Aug/beginning Sept) Opening times are seasonal – check website and to book tickets in advance of your visit (due to covid). www.drumlanrigcastle.co.uk/

This trip is a bit further afield but if you are avid fan of birds of prey, it's a fantastic place to visit to watch 100's of red kites feed. http://www.bellymackhillfarm.co.uk/index.htm These birds have started to migrate further north and can now be viewed around this area. I have seen them between the villages of Wiston, Roberton and Lamington, near the River Clyde so keep a look out!

Edinburgh is just under an hour away by car, or you can travel by bus from Biggar or by train from Carstairs Junction. It's a vibrant city to visit with so many things to see and do. If you do drive, I would recommend parking at the NCP car park at Castle Terrace. If you visit the National Museum of Scotland (free to visit and a ten minute walk from the cark park), go to the reception and they will give you a ticket to give you discounted parking at the NCP car park - £10 last time I checked. Well worth popping in just for the discounted parking as it can be expensive to leave your car there for the day. If you want more info on things to see and do in Edinburgh, please contact me and I will happily share my suggestions with you. My favourite things to do in Edinburgh besides wandering and soaking up the atmosphere are:- a visit to the Royal Mile Edinburgh Castle Camera Obscura The National Museum of Scotland Arthur's Seat (it's a hill located to the south of the city and offers wonderful views)

I am a Glasgae girl, born and bread. I love the city and have a particular fondness for the West end of Glasgow, the most vibrant part of the city in my opinion. Byres Road, Ashton Lane, The Botanical garden and Kelvingrove Park are well worth a visit, and you can tie that in with a visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Huntarian Museum located at the University of Glasgow. Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth games in 2014 and has also been recognised as the Glasgow City of Culture. It is easily accessible by car, bus (X74 from Abington Services - 5 mins drive) or train (from Lanark). There is so much to see and do from museums, galleries, parks, shops and so much more. It definitely has one of the best live music scenes in Scotland. If you want any particular information on things to do or how to get around the city, please just contact me and I will happily share with you my recommendations on the best things to see and do during your stay.

If you have never visited Scotland before and are willing to travel a little further, then you can visit the highlands (1.5hr drive) The first stop is Loch Lomond Shores, at the bottom of Loch Lomond, located in Balloch. https://lochlomondshores.com/ There are also many walks in the area if you want to get off the beaten track https://www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/things-to-do/walking/short-moderate-walks/ If you really want to make it special, I can thoroughly recommend a trip on the sea plane, which sets off from Cameron House Hotel on the banks of Loch Lomond. However you must book in advance. We did this for a special birthday and we could see so far north and right across to Ireland. The International Purves Puppets have now been firmly established as a leading professional company for 40 years, in which time they have toured the world, while also performing in their own award winning permanent theatre - the first and only fully working puppet theatre of its kind in Scotland. Parks

A 5 minute drive from the cottage. Roberton Park is a public park looked after by the residents, and if you go in the summer months you will see the wonderful work the local gardening group have done to create a beautiful display. Great swings, climbing frames and green area to play football. Dogs welcome but please clean up after them. It’s a great enclosed space to let your dog off the lead. We spend a lot of time here with the dog and my children. Great to let them all have a run around. If you drive down to the village hall there's plenty of parking space behind the hall. As long as you are respectful of the grounds, the villagers are more than happy for you to use this space.

If you turn left just before Remax on the High St, it’s at the top of the hill on the left. Drive down through the little river (don’t worry ,your car will be fine if you take it slowly – all the locals cars are still intact!) Park on the other side in the designated parking area. Great play park for various age groups (Older children 12+ will prefer the apparatus at the bottom of the park – next to the old Gas works). Great for dog walkers. Great water feature for children to play in during the warmer weather.

This is one of our favourite places to eat and they were also shortlisted as UK pub finalist of the year 2019. All their ingredients are locally sourced, hand cooked meals. Choose from the lunch or dinner menu or drop in for the Sunday carvery. Great for families. Dogs welcome too. Relaxed Dining, Real Fire and a great beer garden. Local Ales, Large selection of Gins. Live music nights with local musicians (including my husband) can be seen playing here regularly. They also do a home delivery service, either order online or by phone. Fantastic Indian food. In the last few years they have either been nominated for the Scottish Curry Awards & Scottish Entertainment and Hospitality Award or won an award. They really go the extra mile to make sure you have an amazing dining experience. Great to dine out, or alternatively enjoy a take away meal. Home delivery available. They also do amazing european food, my son loves their fish supper, probably better than any of the local fish and chip shops and their portions are large! www.tajmahal-biggar.co.uk

They don't have a website which is a shame but there is a menu in the cottage. You can sit in or take-away and either order food to collect or they will deliver. We really like this Chinese take-away, have never been disappointed. Good portions sizes too.

A great fish and chip shop with all the usual offerings. They also do amazing stone baked pizzas which we love! You can sit-in or takeaway. It can get busy at a weekend though so worth noting that you can phone in advance to order and collect your meal when it's ready. www.townhead-cafe.co.uk

Neighbourhoods

Biggar occupies a key location close to two of Scotland's great rivers, the Clyde flowing to the west, and the Tweed flowing to the east. Stone and Bronze-age artefacts have been found in the area but the strongest evidence of settlement occurs on the hills surrounding the town. One of these is Bizzyberry Hill, located to the east of the town where Iron Age remains dating back almost 2000 years have been found. The present day A702 follows the route of a Roman road, which linked the Clyde Valley with Musselburgh. In the 12th century, in return for the promise of support, King David I gave the lands of Biggar to Baldwin, a Fleming leader. He built a motte and bailey castle, which can still be seen north-west of the High Street. The first permanent crossing of the Biggar Burn was also built. It is thought that there has been a church at Biggar since the 6th or 7th century, although the first stone kirk was built in 1164, on the site of the existing kirk. In the 14th century, the Fleming family were given lands in the area by Robert the Bruce, whose cause they had supported. The Flemings built Boghall Castle, visible as a ruin until the early 20th century, but now only represented by a few mounds. The town continued to grow as an important market town, and in 1451 the town became a burgh. The market place remains the central focus of the town. The kirk was rebuilt as a Collegiate church in 1546 for Malcolm, 3rd Lord Fleming, the last to be established before the Reformation of 1560. The Flemings found themselves on the wrong side in the 16th century, when they supported Mary, Queen of Scots. Their lands remained in the Fleming family until the 18th century when the male line of succession ended. The lands passed into the Elphinstone family in 1735 on the marriage of the heiress Lady Clementina Fleming to Charles, Lord Elphinstone. Biggar Gas Works opened in 1836, producing gas from coal. In 1973, with the introduction of natural gas, the works closed. Biggar had its own railway station on the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway between 1860 and 1953. In early 1900 a farmer located in Biggar founded Albion Motors as a small business which eventually grew into the largest truck company in the British Empire. The company still exists as part of the Leyland DAF group. The archives of Albion motors can still be found in Biggar. In the summer of 1940 several thousands of Polish soldiers were stationed here, having been evacuated after the collapse of France. The singer Richard Tauber, whose wife Diana Napier was working with the Polish Red Cross, put on a special performance of the operetta The Land of Smiles during a two-week run in Glasgow. Later the Polish soldiers moved to the east coast of Scotland to defend the coast and to train for their deployment as the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Normandy, Belgium and the Netherlands. Today, Biggar is a thriving commuter town with a population of around 7,000 and still retains much character and charm. It has many independent shops, restraunts and cafes, a high school and primary school.

This little shop has so many goodies. You can get coffee/cakes/snacks to sit in or take-away and in my opinion they do the best coffee in the town. They also have a great selection of deli items from sweet treats, jams, preserves, cheeses and other lovely goodies if you fancy treating yourself or a loved one. It might be small, but don't be deceived, it has a treasure trove of goodies inside!
