During our open season (April - Oct) you can try your luck at finding your own gold. Yes! Real Gold! Our enthusiastic and friendly guides will teach you the basics of gold panning – you may just catch gold fever! Gold Panning Licenses are available from reception along with gold panning equipment for prospecting in the local streams.

156 High StA fantastic little museum on Biggar High Street with lots of local history and old shops that you can pop in and see what the town used to be like. It's very hands on and children will enjoy dressing up in old costumes, playing with old toys or working an old telephone exchange system. Lots of local history. We love popping in here on a rainy day.
A bit further afield, but this castle is amazing and every child's dream of what a castle should be with it's wide moat, twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements, Caerlaverock is the epitome of the medieval stronghold.

There is so much to see and do from museums, galleries, parks, shops and so much more. It definitely has one of the best live music scenes in Scotland.

I am a Glasgae girl, born and bread. I love the city and have a particular fondness for the West end of Glasgow, the most vibrant part of the city in my opinion. Byres Road, Ashton Lane, The Botanical garden and Kelvingrove Park are well worth a visit, and you can tie that in with a visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Huntarian Museum located at the University of Glasgow.

The International Purves Puppets have now been firmly established as a leading professional company for 40 years, in which time they have toured the world, while also performing in their own award winning permanent theatre - the first and only fully working puppet theatre of its kind in Scotland.
It's great for children but I would definitely recommend booking in advance if you want to see one of their shows. Our children (and us adults too) have really enjoyed it.

Parks
A 5 minute drive from the cottage. Roberton Park is a public park looked after by the residents, and if you go in the summer months you will see the wonderful work the local gardening group have done to create a beautiful display. Great swings, climbing frames and green area to play football. Dogs welcome but please clean up after them. It’s a great enclosed space to let your dog off the lead. We spend a lot of time here with the dog and my children. Great to let them all have a run around. If you drive down to the village hall there's plenty of parking space behind the hall. As long as you are respectful of the grounds, the villagers are more than happy for you to use this space.
Roberton Village Hall
A73A 5 minute drive from the cottage. Roberton Park is a public park looked after by the residents, and if you go in the summer months you will see the wonderful work the local gardening group have done to create a beautiful display. Great swings, climbing frames and green area to play football. Dogs welcome but please clean up after them. It’s a great enclosed space to let your dog off the lead. We spend a lot of time here with the dog and my children. Great to let them all have a run around. If you drive down to the village hall there's plenty of parking space behind the hall. As long as you are respectful of the grounds, the villagers are more than happy for you to use this space.
If you turn left just before Remax on the High St, it’s at the top of the hill on the left. Drive down through the little river (don’t worry ,your car will be fine if you take it slowly – all the locals cars are still intact!) Park on the other side in the designated parking area. Great play park for various age groups (Older children 12+ will prefer the apparatus at the bottom of the park – next to the old Gas works). Great for dog walkers. Great water feature for children to play in during the warmer weather.

Biggar Mill RoadIf you turn left just before Remax on the High St, it’s at the top of the hill on the left. Drive down through the little river (don’t worry ,your car will be fine if you take it slowly – all the locals cars are still intact!) Park on the other side in the designated parking area. This is a lovely park for families and also great to get your dog exercised on the large grassy lawns There's a small playpark or you can take a walk around the fairy garden and see what you can spot. You can access the walkway to the river clyde and walk along to New Lanark.

Neighbourhoods
Biggar occupies a key location close to two of Scotland's great rivers, the Clyde flowing to the west, and the Tweed flowing to the east. Stone and Bronze-age artefacts have been found in the area but the strongest evidence of settlement occurs on the hills surrounding the town. One of these is Bizzyberry Hill, located to the east of the town where Iron Age remains dating back almost 2000 years have been found. The present day A702 follows the route of a Roman road, which linked the Clyde Valley with Musselburgh.
In the 12th century, in return for the promise of support, King David I gave the lands of Biggar to Baldwin, a Fleming leader. He built a motte and bailey castle, which can still be seen north-west of the High Street. The first permanent crossing of the Biggar Burn was also built. It is thought that there has been a church at Biggar since the 6th or 7th century, although the first stone kirk was built in 1164, on the site of the existing kirk.
In the 14th century, the Fleming family were given lands in the area by Robert the Bruce, whose cause they had supported. The Flemings built Boghall Castle, visible as a ruin until the early 20th century, but now only represented by a few mounds. The town continued to grow as an important market town, and in 1451 the town became a burgh. The market place remains the central focus of the town. The kirk was rebuilt as a Collegiate church in 1546 for Malcolm, 3rd Lord Fleming, the last to be established before the Reformation of 1560. The Flemings found themselves on the wrong side in the 16th century, when they supported Mary, Queen of Scots. Their lands remained in the Fleming family until the 18th century when the male line of succession ended. The lands passed into the Elphinstone family in 1735 on the marriage of the heiress Lady Clementina Fleming to Charles, Lord Elphinstone.
Biggar Gas Works opened in 1836, producing gas from coal. In 1973, with the introduction of natural gas, the works closed. Biggar had its own railway station on the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway between 1860 and 1953.
In early 1900 a farmer located in Biggar founded Albion Motors as a small business which eventually grew into the largest truck company in the British Empire. The company still exists as part of the Leyland DAF group. The archives of Albion motors can still be found in Biggar.
In the summer of 1940 several thousands of Polish soldiers were stationed here, having been evacuated after the collapse of France. The singer Richard Tauber, whose wife Diana Napier was working with the Polish Red Cross, put on a special performance of the operetta The Land of Smiles during a two-week run in Glasgow. Later the Polish soldiers moved to the east coast of Scotland to defend the coast and to train for their deployment as the 1st Polish Armoured Division in Normandy, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Today, Biggar is a thriving commuter town with a population of around 7,000 and still retains much character and charm. It has many independent shops, restraunts and cafes, a high school and primary school.
