Sightseeing

This is a local favorite! Alki Beach is the principal tourist attraction at Alki Point. It features sand, saltwater, bungalows, and unique local restaurants. It is generally not a popular swimming beach, owing to the cold waters of Puget Sound. It offers stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and downtown Seattle from all points. Alki Beach is also a place to "people watch" or get a tan, and it provides a casual environment for people to gather and hang out. There is access for wheelchair users and roller-skaters. Alki Beach is also famed for its biking and walking trail, which provides a picturesque view of nearby Blake Island. Tourist attractions include the miniature of the Statue of Liberty, the iconic Alki Point Lighthouse and the Birthplace of Seattle monument which also includes a people tribute to the Indigenous Duwamish people without whom the first settlers would not have thrived. The main commercial strip in West Seattle, uphill from Alki Beach, California Ave SW provides five-and-dime shops and diners that recall earlier decades.

Closest ski hill. Just an hour from Seattle on Interstate -90, The Summit at Snoqualmie (and Alpental) re-define convenience, variety, and fun for skiers and snowboarders. Featuring famous steeps, backbowls, terrain parks, a Nordic center and Tubing Park as well as great learning terrain, The Summit delivers 7 days, and 6 nights a week, and is less than 50 miles from downtown Seattle! A strong component of The Summit's success story comes from offering value-based season passes for our loyal regional guests, as well beginner lesson and rental products and packages that make it easy for guests to become lifelong skiers or snowboarders.

Best skiing in the area claim the locals. At 2,600 ac, Crystal Mountain is the largest ski area in Washington State and the state’s only true destination resort. You can ski all day, après all night, and get after it again the next day without having to even think about your car! It’s two hours from Seattle proper, and even closer for powderhounds in south-sound cities like Tacoma and Olympia. A popular choice for families, it boasts a wide variety of terrain, including more runs above the tree-line than most resorts in the area. It also offers some of the best views of Mt. Rainier (Tahoma in the local Salishan) you can get without actually being a mountaineer.

Stevens Pass is a little further from Seattle than Snoqualmie (about an hour and a half, depending on traffic). It also happens to be 1,000 ft higher, so the snow is almost always better. While it has a good ski school and dedicated learning areas, it’s real strength is it’s intermediate and advanced terrain, particularly on the backside and off the 7th Heaven Chair. Longtime locals might still have some reservations about the recent Vail acquisition, but the investment is already paying dividends with some newly upgraded lifts. There isn’t much in the way of slope-side accommodations (at least not yet), but Bavarian-themed Leavenworth is only about 30 minutes east on Highway 2.

Mount Baker holds the record for the world’s most snowfall in one season, amassing 1,140 in of the stuff in 1998-99. They actually had to dig trenches for some of the lifts to be able to run! It’s known for easily accessible extreme terrain and a permissive “at your own risk” philosophy, and there is no shortage of access points to unpatrolled backcountry. There are three day lodges at this still-family-owned and proudly independent ski area, with rental condos available in nearby Glacier and plenty of hotels in Bellingham. Popular with both Canadians and north Puget Sound residents, it’s a three-hour trek from Seattle but is well worth it!

Great place for quality seafood. Most plates are between $25-$30 but the quality and proportions justify the price. My favorite dish here is the crab linguini pasta. Lots of big fresh crab leg chunks on a bed of pasta with delicious alfredo sauce.

We ask that our guests take off their shoes at the doors as there are loads of pine needels around because of all the pine trees. The carpet in the bedrooms are white so are most of the linens. ;) We have a defuser so if you're into enhancing your relaxation that way please bring your favorite oils.
