Sightseeing

A stunning 3-tiered waterfall in the heart of Tangoio Forest, just 20 minutes from Napier. Tangoio Falls is absolutely gorgeous, and is particularly spectacular after rain. Starting from the swing bridge at the carpark, the falls is a 50 minute return walk which follows the stream. Tangoio Falls and Te Ana Falls are both accessed from the same starting point. They share the first 10 minutes then head in different directions. From the tracks junction uphill walking leads you to the waterfall's viewing platform. The track can be muddy and slippery - so take care! The base of the waterfall is officially inaccessible. Return via the same track. Don't forget to walk a side track to Te Ana Falls (definitely worth it!) - it will take just 5 minutes from the track junction to reach the falls. To get there (10-15 mins), drive out to State Highway 2 and head north (right). It sits off to the right of SH 2, about 13km from the Beach House. A large car park is on your right and well signposted. There are picnic tables available (no toilets).

Lake Tutira and the Tutira Recreation Reserve is located approximately 29km north of the Beach House and covers 174 ha. Lake Tutira is home to an abundance of wildlife and is a popular fishing spot as it is annually filled with Tarawera sourced trout. Boating, kayaking and swimming is also popular however watch for periodic algal blooms and more recently “duck or swimmer’s itch” (caused by a snail-borne parasite) as these are health hazards – please take note of water quality warning signs. The park offers picnicking and short-term camping space and there are 5 walking tracks which, at the higher points, provide splendid views across the lake and hill country to the Kaweka Range. For a longer walk, The Tutira Walkway takes around five hours to complete and ascends to the Table Mountain trig station. The Tutira Walkway is closed for lambing from 1 August until 30 September. For a smaller exploration, hit the Waikopiro Loop Track. This is 1.1km which takes 20 minutes and although short, you will see an abundance of native plants. Shelters, picnic and toilet facilities are available at the lake. Non-motorised boats only are permitted on the lake. To get there (25 mins), drive out to State Highway 2 and head north (right). Rising 58 metres, Shine Falls is Hawke's Bay's most spectacular waterfall. Shine Falls is roughly a 53 mins drive away from the Beach House, and the last 12km is gravel road - but it's worth the trip! The Shine Falls track is a 1.5 hour return walk, and leads to the base of the waterfall. The walk passes through farmland and beneath towering sandstone bluffs. There are some uphill sections on the track as well as stream crossings, but they are all bridged and easy. Low-land forest includes kanuka, kawakawa, kowhai and titoki. To get there (53 mins), head north-east (turn right) on SH2 and follow it for the next 30km until you see the 'Shine Falls' sign, where you need to turn left into Matahorua Rd. After 11km turn left into Heays Access Rd. Follow this road for 6.5 km until you reach a DOC car park, on your left, with a picnic table (no toilets).
