Sightseeing

There is a beach in walking distance. Leaving the house take a left onto Highway 1, and take your first left onto Boice lane, then your next left onto Ocean Drive. From there you will see a trailhead for Belinda Point on the right-hand side. This will take you to the beach where there is a semi-steep embankment with stairs to access the beach area.

Pacific Star Winery, located about 15 minutes north of Fort Bragg on Highway 1, is worth the trip. Adirondack chairs placed in pairs around the property allow you to grab a bottle of wine (I recommend the Vioigner), and enjoy the serene yet dramatic views of waves crashing over the rocky coastline.

Mendocino is the only town on the California Coast that is designated as an Historical Landmark. Established in the 1850's, the architecture is reminiscent of Maine with its grand Victorians and quaint, Saltbox cottages. Flowers grow lush and many of the Mendocino hotels offer beautiful gardens to enjoy. Located 10 minutes south on Highway 1.

No visit to Mendocino County is complete without “getting lost” in the redwoods. For a local redwood experience, head into Otis-Johnson Park, take Laurel Street East until it dead-ends (an 8 minute drive from the house)

MacKerricher State Park offers a variety of habitats; beach, bluff, headland, dune, forest and wetland. Tide pools are along the shore. Seals may be seen on the rocks off the park's coastline. More than 90 species of birds visit or live near Cleone Lake, a former tidal lagoon. During winter and spring, the nearby headland provides a good lookout for whale watching. The park is popular with hikers, joggers, equestrians and bicyclists. Free day use.

Luna Trattoria has become one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. Located in the quaint town of Mendocino, among the Victorian homes and sweeping panoramic views, you will find some of the best Italian food with a quirky, almost Grateful-Dead/hippy-inspired vibe. Live music as well. Call ahead for reservations.
