Set in the Wye Valley offering history and walking in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey are less than ten miles from The Folly. Famous for inspiring the poet William Wordsworth, this ruined Cistercian Abbey is still a magical place. For the best views, head for the Offa’s Dyke Path and up to Devil’s Pulpit. According to legend, this rocky outcrop overlooking the Abbey was once used by Satan himself as he tried to tempt the monks in the valley below away from their holy duties.

The unmistakable silhouette of Raglan crowning a ridge amid glorious countryside is the grandest castle ever built by Welshmen. We can thank Sir William ap Thomas, the ‘blue knight of Gwent’, for the moated Great Tower of 1435 that still dominates this mighty fortress-palace. His son Sir William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke, created the gatehouse with its flared ‘machicolations’. These stone arches allowed missiles to be rained down on attackers. But Raglan came 150 years later than the turbulent heyday of castle-building. It was designed to impress as much as to intimidate.

You’ll find plenty of tempting independent boutiques amid the handsome Georgian and Victorian buildings in the centre of town. The town has also received an award-winning redevelopment, adding smart pedestrian areas decorated with stone walls and sculptures inspired by local legends. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from. Chepstow has a striking Regency road bridge has carried traffic from Chepstow to Gloucestershire since 1816. With massive pillars topped by five arches of gracefully curved cast iron, it crosses one of the world’s most tidal stretches of river. Between high and low tide, the Wye can drop by almost 15 metres. Remember to visit Chepstow Castle, it has a very interesting past.

One of the grandest stately homes in Wales, Tredegar House was bought by the National Trust in 2011 and opened its doors to visitors in 2013. Highlights of the self-guided tour include the grand baroque Jacobean New Hall and the enormous Victorian kitchens, both restored to their former glory. Don't miss the lavish Victorian Side Hall, lined with portraits of the Morgan family, which owned Tredegar until the 1950s. The grounds include immaculately laid-out formal gardens and an orangery. Tredegar is just outside Newport, 12 miles northwest of Cardiff.
