The General Air Academy (AGA) is a military academy of the Air and Space Force aimed at training future Air Force officers. It is located in San Javier, in the Region of Murcia. This institution is operational under the Air Force Personnel Command (MAPER) and an organic unit of the General Air Command (MAGEN). It also houses a University Defense Center attached to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. History Access control to the General Air Academy, located on Calle Coronel López Peña in Santiago de la Ribera. Its origin dates back to 1927, when a naval air base began to be built in Santiago de la Ribera to strategically protect the fleet established in the port of Cartagena. Originally, these facilities housed the schools and other dependencies of the Naval Aeronautics. Most of the buildings of the Academy belong to this period in which it belonged to the Navy. At the head of the project was Lieutenant Commander Rafael Ramos-Izquierdo, who was the first commander of the base.1 The construction of the base took several years: in 1928 the first hangars were built, in 1929 the student accommodations, the infirmary and the power plant, in 1930 the buildings of the headquarters, armory, pharmacy and a hangar for airships, and by 1931 the construction of the depots was completed and it was decided to move it from the El Prat aerodrome which at that time supplied the functions that the AGA was going to be assigned. On August 8, 1939, after the end of the civil war, the law that created the Air Ministry was enacted, and its first head, Juan Yagüe Blanco, was appointed by decree the following day. Shortly after, the law of October 7, 1939 created the Air Force. It was originally decided to locate the headquarters of the Academy in the now defunct Alcalá de Henares Air Base (Madrid). In 1943, the San Javier air base became the headquarters of the General Air Academy, with the function of training future officers in the military, aeronautical, cultural and physical aspects. The first class began its studies in 1945, with the first director being Colonel Antonio Munaiz de Brea and for 45 years officers of the Aviation Arm, the Quartermaster Corps, and the Corps of Aeronautical Engineers were trained, in addition to the optional Corps of the Air Force, Legal, Intervention, Military Health, Pharmacy... In the Aviation Arm the officers of the "Air Scale" and "Troops and Services" were trained, in the rest of the Corps the officers of the only scale that existed in each Corps were trained. The officers of the then "auxiliary" or "special" scales were trained in other centres (School of Reus and School of Specialists in León). Since 1945, more than 6000 students have studied there. At present, at the end of their training, students reach the military position of lieutenant, when the "Average Scale of Officers" existed, the members of this scale graduated with the job of ensign, which has once again been exclusively for students and as initial employment of the Volunteer Reservists with the rank of officer. The total number of flight hours developed up to 2008 was more than 750,000.
