This farm-to-table bistro offers surprisingly good fare that will delight your taste buds and easily please any foodie. The restaurant itself is tiny, offering only 8 tables indoors and 1 table plus 4 bar seats on their porch facing Main Street. However, for a garden experience you can go around the back of the building and find their charming garden where you can experience the same delicious food outdoors with your furry friends.

As a Southern native, I can say this family owned and operated soul food BBQ juke joint is the real deal. Saucy Mama's recipes are straight from the burrows of New Orleans with a little twist of California. With dishes such as fried catfish, BBQ chicken, BBQ pork ribs, shrimp po' boy, mac & cheese, fried okra and cornbread waffles, your mouth will be watering and you'll be coming back for more. The restaurant itself is fun and funky, decorated with memorabilia from New Orleans and bopping with music. You'll find yourself tapping your feet while you chow down on the best and most authentic soul food you can find in Sonoma County.

This place is a definite must do for those with little ones, but even adults will enjoy wandering through the aisles looking at all the toys and trinkets.

Experience the beauty of the majestic California Coastal Redwoods in this local state park. Located in a canyon just 2 miles north of Guerneville Main Street, this park was set aside as a nature preserve in the 1870s by Colonel James Armstrong. Enjoy the magical energy and silence that exists only in redwood forests as you walk down the variety of paths and trails throughout the park. It isn't large in size at only 805 acres, but it is awesome and absolutely worth experiencing. A couple of notable trees that exist in this park include the 1400+ year old Colonel Armstrong and the 310 ft tall Parson Jones. Adults and children alike will enjoy a trip to this nature preserve. Tip: get there early if you can as parking is limited and this is a popular destination.

Johnson's Beach has been a local favorite for more than 100 years. Situated on the river in downtown Guerneville, this privately operated pebble beach has something for everyone. They offer rentals of umbrellas, chairs, kayaks and paddle boats, as well as a food stand with hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and snacks. Note: Parking is $7/car and you are not allowed to bring your own sun shade; you must rent their umbrellas for $10 if you want sun shade.

Located in nearby Geyserville, this is one of my favorite wineries. Robert Young Estate Winery is family owned and most known for their cabernets and chardonnays, although they do also offer rose, viognier and merlot. You'll enjoy the drive down country roads flanked by vineyards to get there, only to be rewarded with the most amazing view of Alexander Valley from their tasting room on top of a hill. A definite must do if you are up for exploring outside Guerneville.

This is another favorite winery of mine, which offers exquisite pinots and chardonnays. At their tasting room in nearby Healdsburg, you'll enjoy an outdoor tasting experience on their patio overlooking a vineyard. Reservations highly recommended.

Activities

Every time we're in the area, my five year old son makes me take him to this fun and offbeat 36 hole miniature golf course. Built and designed by Welder Bill Koplin in 1948, this wonderfully odd and somewhat cheesy, pee wee golf course is easily identifiable by the large purple dinosaur visible from Hwy 116. Funny and fantastical sculptures are found throughout the course, such as two cannibals cooking a man in a pot labeled "vegetarian stew," a giant Allosaurus rex dinosaur, a monkey who's seen more action than your average person and a jailhouse for the naughty. Pee Wee Golf & Arcade offers an enjoyable throw back to the days of our youth, and may very well be the birth place of Odd Golf Sculpture. Worth a visit at least once, although you may find yourself there numerous times if you have little ones!

The Spa at Dawn Ranch is a full service spa offering massages, body treatments, a steam room, infrared sauna and mineral baths under the redwoods. The massages are amazing and it is quite an experience sitting in a redwood bathtub outside under the trees and listening to the birds. I highly recommend if you want a quality spa experience without having to drive very far.
