Vernooy Falls is the highest waterfall in the Catskills, located on the Wallkill River, which flows from Blue Mountain to Rondout Creek. The falls are actually two waterfalls that divide into three cascades. In 1871, a man named James Vernooy built a mill at the base of the falls for grinding corn and wheat. The mill was powered by water from Vernooy Falls, and it was one of the first mills in Ulster County to use hydroelectric power.
