Food scene

We are spoilt for choice of great cafes, bars and good food within a 5 minute walk.
Bear with Me cafe is directly across the road. Perfect for that first morning coffee and they also make a wicked breakfast. Try some of their Asian fusion, but our fave is their thick sliced bacon. You wont miss the cafe as it has a mural wall of the Hobart Rivulet platypus. The mural was sponsored by the HRP group, who engaged Jimmy Dvate to paint the mural. Jimmy stayed with us for the 4 days it took to paint and you get a great view of the mural from the balcony.

Great trendy cafe. Good food and good vibes. We love the free jaffa you get with each hot drink, and they always have a delicious specials board. Kids wont go past the Ginger brown Gingerbread person.

Enjoy a lovely stroll along the rivulet to this cafe. It is a social enterprise and trains young disadvantaged people in hospitality. And it does a great job because the food is delicious

Walk up the rivulet to the brewery. Sit outside and enjoy the grand historic gardens. Great place for kids too, plenty of space to run around.

Things to do with kids

This is a great place for kids, make sure they pick up their explorers pack at the door. Always good for a rainy day.

Take a stroll down the rivulet. Keep your eyes open for the platypus, there are at least 5 platypus in there. Walking towards the mountain, there are plenty of things for the kids to do, including a climbing gym near the absailing wall. The C3 church also has an excellent playground for smaller children and its open to the public, parents can enjoy the cafe while kids play. Take the opportunity to visit the Convict Female Factory, or leave it for a separate adventure. Walking towards the mountain and you will eventually come to the brewery, cross the road here and discover the cascades brewery garden, it really is delightful. Plenty of space for kids to play and mum and dad can enjoy a drink before the walk home again. Come back via the same track or via the road. If you are keen you can walk past the brewery and there is another track called the cascade track which continues up the mountain. Walking East towards the city, kids can play in the creek, chase the turbo chooks (not really) but they a fun to watch. Find the hidden tracks and eventually come to the Hamlet cafe. Return home or continue into town.

My kids call this the whale park, it is a large park near the beach, but is fenced so you don't need to worry about the little ones, but plenty to do for the big kids too. In the summer they often have a night market on Friday nights

Sightseeing

Mount Wellington has spectacular views not only of Hobart, but up and down the river Derwent as well as out to Bruny Island. It is a not to missed part of your Hobart visit. There are also plenty of walks short and easy or long and hard. I highly recommend Sphinx rock walk from the Springs, walk past the rock a couple of hundred metres and you will see another little stone cabin. If you are game walk up the icehouse track across the top and down the zigzag track, allow a good 4 hours for this one. Another great place to visit on the mountain is Junction Cabin, you can either walk from the springs or take the Myrtle Gully track. Whatever you do dont miss the great coffee at Lost Freight at the springs about 3/4 of the way to the top. Don't worry you don't need to walk for this one.

If you don't have time to get to Cradle Mountain on you Tassie trip this is the next best thing. Russell Falls is spectacular but drive a little further to Lake Dobson and you will get a real experience of what Tassie has to offer, a short walk arount the Lake will take your through a beautiful pandani forest and if its winter it is often frozen over. If you like longer walks the tarn shelf is one of my favourite Tassie walks, walk up through the snow gum track and enjoy the stunning view of the lakes and you can short cut make through the ski fields. In the summer you can swim in the tarns and in the winter you might even get some snow. Best day ever!!!!

If you didn't come to Hobart just to go to MONA, you are one of the few, but you shouldn't miss it anyway. Just the architecture is fantastic, and on a nice day lay out on the bean bags, enjoy the music and sit back with a nice glass of wine. Let me know what your favourite exhibit is. Mine always changes, there are so many strange and quirky things.

Conseils aux voyageurs

Que faut-il apporter ?

Lots of layers

Even in summer Hobart it can be cool in Hobart especially in the evenings. Never go out at night without at least one extra layer, in summer a hoodie or jumper will do but in winter you will need a warm coat or puffer jacket.
Que faut-il apporter ?

Sunhat, sunglasses and sunhat

Although it can be cool, our sun is very intense so if you have direct sunlight you will be warm, in all but winter this will burn so bring your sunblock, sunglasses and sunhat.
