http://cadw.gov.wales/daysout/castell-coch/?lang=en While resting on ancient foundations, fairy tale Castell Coch (Red Castle) is relatively modern, the by-product of a vivid Victorian imagination, assisted by untold wealth. High Gothic was the order of the day. The ‘eccentric genius’ William Burges was given free rein by his paymaster, John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd marquess of Bute, to create a rural retreat to complement the opulence of his main residence, Cardiff Castle. He didn’t hold back. Dazzling ceilings, over-the-top furnishings and furniture were liberally applied. Detailed architectural drawings still survive today.

http://cadw.gov.wales/splash?orig=/daysout/caerphilly-castle Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly; stone behemoth, surrounded by a series of moats and watery islands was the brainchild of Gilbert ‘the Red’ de Clare, a redheaded nobleman of Norman descent. He also built the original Castell Coch, ‘Red Castle’, located the other side of Caerphilly mountain. Gilbert de Clare and Llywelyn ap Gruffydd were contemporaries at war and early attempts by Gilbert to build a castle were thwarted by the Welsh prince. Gilbert eventually won through and built a mammoth stronghold using the concentric ‘walls within walls’ system of defence.

http://ruperra.weebly.com The views from the grounds are, as Dr. Malkin justly states, singularly beautiful. “The prospect was uncommonly attractive. The harvest-moon at the full was just risen. The effect of it shining on the Bristol Channel, with the bold hills of Somersetshire beyond, was in a high degree beautiful. The Channel, though from twelve to fifteen miles across, seemed but like an inland river. The mountain-valley of Caerphilly, as you come upon the Newport Road, has a powerful effect on the mind, as seen by a bright moonlight."

http://cadw.gov.wales/daysout/stlythansburialchamber/?lang=en Known locally as gwal-y-filiast – kennel of the greyhound bitch - this single stone chamber is all that remains of a once much larger burial monument. The name may come from a variant of the Arthurian legend of Culhwch and Olwen, which appears in two fourteenth-century Welsh texts, but the site itself is very much older dating from the Neolithic period, some 5,000 to 6,000 years ago. St Lythans is a type of monument known as a chambered long cairn and was originally covered by an earthen mound, probably similar to that found at its close neighbour, Tinkinswood.

Just five miles off the coast, the stunning island of Flat Holm is a different world with a wealth of history and wildlife. You’ll be amazed at how much there is to discover. Since the Dark Ages, the island has been a retreat for monks and acted as a sanctuary for Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, silver miners and smugglers. It’s perhaps most famous for receiving the first ever radio message across water by Guglielmo Marconi in 1897. A day visit by boat provides you with three to six hours on the island. Enjoy a drink at The Gull and Leek, Wales’ most southerly pub. Overnight visits can be arranged. 0044 2920 877 912

http://cadw.gov.wales/daysout/blaenavonironworks Over two hundred years ago, a different form of cutting-edge technology enabled the power of steam to be harnessed, making Blaenavon possible and taking Wales’s industrial might to a new height. Charging to casting. Charging took place at the ‘furnace top’ with coal, iron ore and limestone, before casting the molten metal in the yard below. However, the ironworks is only one part of the story. The surrounding landscape is also revolutionary in its form and function. From mines to train lines, you can still trace the routes in and routes out, from raw material to finished product.
