The Kelpies are truly impressive and well worth a visit. constructed just three-years-ago they are two 30-metre-high horse head sculptures built of structural steel with a stainless steel cladding. Weighing 300 tonnes each they are intended to celebrate the horse’s role in industry and agriculture as well as the obvious association with the canals as tow horses. They are situated in Helix park which provides activities such as cycling, walking, watersports and much more. they have become an iconic landmark clearly visible from the M9 motorway and beautifully lit up at night.

It is just a 4 minute drive between the Falkirk wheel and the Kelpies so the two together make a great day out. The Falkirk Wheel , a boat lift which connects the Forth and Union with the Clyde canal, is a real feat of engineering. Replacing a series of old locks, it is the world’s only rotating boat lift. It is well worth taking an hour-long boat round trip on the canals which involves an ascent and descent through the wheel.

Dunfermline Palace and Abbey are the remains of a great Benedictine abbey founded by Queen Margaret in the 11th century. Beginning as a priory founded by Malcolm’s wife, Queen Margaret, it was re-established as an abbey by her son in 1128 and is the final resting place of King Robert Bruce, notably minus his heart, along with seven other Scottish kings.

One of Scotland's most popular nature reserves, this Vane Farm reserve is teeming with wildlife and Climb the trail through the woodland to the top of Vane Hill for a spectacular view over the Kinross-shire hills and countryside, or meander down to the wetland trail where three hides allow you to get really close to nature. In the summer, you could see ospreys on the loch, and in the winter, thousands of pink-footed geese, swans and ducks make the reserve their home.

Just over an hour's drive, a trip to House of Bruar is a real must and a great day out. Often described as the Harrods of the North it has a huge range of clothing, food, gifts and paintings - a real top class department store. The drive up the A9 is also very scenic AND they have a great restaurant for lunch. But this is not the place to go if you are watching the pennies!!
