Padise Monastery is an architectural and historical site of great importance, not only in Estonian terms but also in those of Northern Europe as a whole. It was constructed in the 14th century by Cistercian monks, but extensions and improvement work continued for more than 200 years. It fell into ruin after a number of wars, with restoration only commencing in the 1930s.

A former limestone mining quarry and the adjacent former Soviet-era prison in Rummu have been turned into Estonia’s “blue lagoon”. Murru limestone mining quarry was established in 1938. Limestone mining continued during the Soviet occupation and was done by convicts of the adjacent Murru prison until the restoration of Estonian independence in 1991. Once mining was no longer necessary and draining of water was stopped, the quarry filled up with natural water and turned into what has recently become known as “blue lagoon”, with crystal clear water. Abandonment of the quarry happened so fast that even some machinery was sunken along with the building

Laitse manor resembles a medieval knight’s castle. The manor, which was built by Woldemar von Uexküll in 1892, is one of the best works of the local neo-Gothic style. During the years of the Republic of Estonia, the interior of the castle was thoroughly reconstructed.
