If fall color season is here, and if you're looking for a sweet destination to take in some awe-inspiring scenery, point your car to the little-known Deadman's Hill in Warner Township. Though relatively unknown, this scenic spot is considered one of the prettiest overlooks in all of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The overlook is located at the end of Deadman's Hill Road, off U.S. 131 about 30 miles south of Petoskey, in the northern Lower Peninsula. The road eventually ends in a dirt parking lot, where you can then walk up a small hill to gaze out over the Jordan River Valley: A wild, 18,000-acre tract of protected land woven through by the Jordan River, a Blue Ribbon trout stream and Michigan's first Wild and Scenic River. The overlook is also the trailhead for the Jordan River Pathway, an 18-mile hiking trail loop that's popular for weekend backpackers (the hike-in Pinney Bridge campground is located halfway through the loop). There is also a three-mile loop for day-hikers.

A WONDER OF ENGINEERING & HUMAN INGENUITY Affectionately called the “Linchpin of the Great Lakes” by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Soo Locks are an engineering marvel with roots dating back to the mid-1800s. Each year it’s estimated that 500,000 people visit these iconic locks that connect Lakes Superior and Huron. Thanks to the Soo Locks freighters over 1,000 feet in length can traverse freely along the St. Marys River all the way from Duluth, Minnesota outward into the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Roughly 7,000 vessels pass through the Locks yearly hauling nearly 86 million tons of cargo. See how freighters, barges, tugboats and more are lifted and lowered the 21-foot difference between Superior and Huron
