Sightseeing

When the lava lake in the crater is active, you can see molten lava bubbling. When the lava lake is not so active, you can still enjoy its beautiful night glow at the lookout. A must see. But the lava lake activity changes all the time, so if the lava lake is not visible when you go the first time, come back and check it out later of the day or another day. You may be pleasantly surprised. The cottage is only a few minutes away, makes it easy to visit the crater frequently.

Kahuku is a hidden treasure in the Volcanoes National Park. Entrance to the Kahuku Unit is about an hour drive from the main entrance of the Park. Kahuku is definitely off the hidden path and is worth your time to travel the extra hour to visit. It is a place of dynamic volcanism, rich Hawaiian traditions and a fascinating history of ranching. Share in the wonders of this 116,000 acre unit of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy the 12 mile scenic drive or hike one or more of the five hiking trails. Kahuku is located on Hwy 11 in Ka‘ū near mile marker 70.5. Open only on Wednesday - Sunday 9am – 4pm.

Closest supermarket from Volcano. I recommend you pickup groceries in Hilo before you drive to Volcano. But if you didn't stop in Hilo, then the Foodland in Kea'au is the closest supermarket.

Hiking

The Mauna Loa Summit Trail is a vigorous back packing trail that takes you to the summit of Mauna Loa. However, we enjoy hiking this trail as a day hike. We just hike as far as we want on the trail. The trail head starts at 6662 ft (2013 m) elevation at the Mauna Loa Lookout. On a clear day, we find this a very pleasant hike. Because of the high elevation, be prepared for rain, strong wind and sun. Be sure to stay on trail and follow the ahu (cairn) trail marks.

Our favorite short hike in the park. About 1.5 hours round trip. The trail take you from rainforest down to the bottom of crater and then back up. Very interesting landscape at the bottom of the crater. Go early to avoid the crowd.

This is a easy delightful 1.2-mile hike, round-trip across relatively flat ground. In total the memorable walk, takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Also known as “Bird Park,” the area is usually alight with numerous rare and beautiful native birds. If you don’t see any, just take a break and sit still for a few minutes. Located within the Mauna Loa volcanic section of the Park, off Highway 11, take Mauna Loa Road about 1.5 miles to reach the Kīpukapuaulu Trailhead.
