Walks

A great spot to access walks around the Afon Mawddach and Coed y Brenin Forest. The walk around the river is relatively easy and takes you over a couple of bridges and passed the impressive waterfalls and old remains of the gold mine (amazingly in operation until the early 1990s). There are several walks that feed off the Afon and take you into the Forest. Access to the water is great too. Lots of potential for stone throwing, skimming and paddling. It is less than a 20min drive away from the house, there are two car parks and lots of informal parking, with no pay required to park. Accessed off the A470 on the right, just after passing the school one the left, there's a fork turning between two national speed limit signs.

Amazing views of the Mawddach estuary as it winds out to the sea. It can be walked to from the house within an hour, with minimal road walking requires. It is not too strenuous yet with the incline it opens up the views out across the estuary. one of our favourite walks, in all weathers. You can also drop down from it to the toll bridge and over to the George III for a well earned drink before walking back along the Mawddach trail.

Another fantastic walk that can be done from the front door. It runs above the Afon Mawddach with panoramic views across the river. Taking you alongside tbr Llyn Cynwch reservoir you get picturesque views across the water with the mountains in the background. A relatively easy walk through tight in places, as the name implies.

A great route connecting Dolgellau and Barmouth by foot or bike. Running along the old train embankment the route winds along the estuary with views of the water and the mountains that are always changing. The tidal movement of the water makes the journey interesting no matter how many times you have previously done it. Sometimes you see the water span the width of the estuary showing how impressive it is. Other times the sand banks are visible as small islands between the maze of water with oyster catchers, little egrets, cormorants and other birds making the most of the water. With the views of the toll bridge the George III pub offers a potential stopping point. There are picnic benches dotted all along the route. Ending in Barmouth there's always the option for a well deserved ice cream or fish and chips too. Plus the pleasure of seeing Barmouth bridge in the distance and then getting to cycle across it. If you're lucky the train will pass you as you cross, a close experience. Alternatively you can turn off at Morfa Mawddach and head to Fairbourne on the well signed route across the marsh land.

An impressive castle set in a prime location. Views from the ramparts are great and the information on the boards around the castle give a good insight into the life of the castle. It is operated by Cadw.

One of the many steam train journeys in the area. This one is a narrow gauge with little carriages and a low ride. It travels along the coast from Fairbourne towards Barmouth stopping at the mouth of the estuary. It's an enjoyable ride, especially for young a young family as the journey is not too long.

On a clear day there is every chance you will get a sighting of one or many of the fighter jets and helicopters that practice on the Mach Loop. First you will hear the sky roar and as you look up scanning the sky you're likely to see one of the aircraft, sometimes incredibly close other times further in the distance but still impressively noisy. The Mach Loop runs round from Dinas Mawddwy, passed Corris to Machynlleth and back. Aircraft that fly it enter at various points and so often there will be planes and helicopters flying over the house, along the estuary and Dolgellau.

A lovely day out can be had in Caernarfon. Visiting the castle is a treat but even just a walk around the walled town and along the water edge there is plenty of character to enjoy. It is a popular spot for crabbing with lots of children, line in hand, using smokey bacon to lure the snappy crustaceans. Just over an hour's drive from Dolgellau you can take a scenic route past Snowdon and through the mountains.

Birds in the garden

The garden has many feathered friends. There are regularly families of blue tits, great tits and long tailed tits that frequent the feeders. Along with the tits there are also several finches that come for a bite to eat, including chaffinches, bullfinches and the rarer hawfinches. Lesser spotted woodpeckers have been seen as well as nuthatches and plenty of song thurshes and blackbirds. Overhead there are occasionally buzzards and red kites too.
