Lunch or brunch?

Places I'd recommend lunching or brunching in that are close by
It's a historical house, filled with staff that are more than willing to show guests around the house and share a bit of Iceland's history with them. The food is great, coffee and cakes as well as events all year round, often in English.

Things to do close by/ also: bars

It's within walking distance of the house. They always have a great selection of good movies, oldies or new ones, in English and Icelandic as well as other languages. The best cinema in Iceland by far in my opinion, for two reasons: They usually don't cut the movies in half for a recess (which is what they do in all the other cinemas) and they have a bar, so it's possible to enjoy the movie with a tasty beer.

It has a beautiful interior and very tasty cocktails and food, but a bit on the pricey side. Within walking distance from the house and is right by Hallgrímskirkja.

The local swimming pool. Within walking distance just over the hill by Hallgrímskirkja. We love to go there as often as possible. We have heated pools and hot tubs, saunas and steam baths. A bit pricey but worth it. If you're staying for a longer time or are planning to go a few times, I'd recommend buying a pass with ten entries, it's much cheaper and the pool is worth visiting often.

This place is about one minute away from the apartment and is the hip bar of 16 - 25 year olds. It plays mostly hip hop and often has Icelandic rappers performing. During the day they serve good burgers.

Situated by a big green park just before you enter the city center, this museum would be a great visit. About 15 minutes walk from the apartment. The building itself is beautiful and the café is in itself worth a visit. They have great exhibits all the time. Definitely worth it.

Food scene

Their bread is to die for, please order enough of it along with the paprika spread. I can almost promise you won't be disappointed. The place is beautiful and great to sit for a romantic evening. Great wine - a bit pricey but worth it. It's within walking distance as it's on Laugavegur, just a few minutes from the house.

This is one of the oldest restaurants still around. It's a bit off the beaten track but only about 3 minutes away from the apartment. If you're interested in trying some fish or steak, this is the place for you.

Our opera house. Ten minutes by foot. Beautiful glass building which is great just for sightseeing but also not so expensive compared to other opera houses if you feel like a concert or an opera. They have all kinds of concerts, so it's worth taking a look at their website.

Coffee

In the mornings they have a Coffee Happy hour, I think it's from 8-10 o'clock a.m, where they serve any kind of coffee for 400 kr. which is much cheaper than you'll get anywhere else, except maybe gas stations. A cappuccino for that price is unheard of today. They also have great coffee, and the café is also a book store. A great place to work on your computer in the morning or have a read from one of the books for sale.

Conseils aux voyageurs

Manières d'économiser

We don't sell liquor or beer in grocery stores

Some grocery stores trick tourists by making their pilsner look like the real thing. Alcohol is sold in stores called Vínbúðin and one of them is situated on the bottom of Laugavegur, 5 minute walk from the apartment.
Manières d'économiser

Don't buy bottled water

Our drinking water is good, wherever you are in Iceland. It's pure and tasty and the water you'd buy in the bottles in stores is the same tap water. So don't get fooled.
Voyage avec enfants

Hannesarholt has a playloft

In the café/culture center next door they have a kid's loft in the attic. It's filled with books and toys for kids to play with, often while the parents sip on good coffee or beer in the restaurant downstairs.
Que faut-il apporter ?

Bring swimsuits

You're going to want to try some of our swimming pools or natural hot springs. So defo bring some bathing suits!
Que faut-il apporter ?

Bring wool undergarments

Undergarments made of fine wool are necessary for the cold winter here. If you have them on, you're pretty good whatever the weather.
À ne pas manquer

Weekend flea market

A few minutes away, we have a flea market every weekend in a place called Kolaportið. It's fun to see and who know's you might find something beautiful for a bargain.
Se déplacer dans les environs

Cheap supermarket a few houses away

Super1 is the name of the supermarket you'll want to buy your food from if you're staying in my apartment. It's in the street next to mine and is relatively cheap compared to other stores.
Se déplacer dans les environs

Local shop across from the apartment

If you're feeling too lazy to walk next street, don't worry, you can take about 10 steps across the street and you're in the small neighbourhood shop, that is a bit more pricey than the supermarket but has most of the things you'll need.
