Just inside the Akumal arch, a local fisherman/dive guide owns this seafood restaurant & fresh fish market. The food is tasty and the atmosphere is casual, with tables both inside and out. Jack, Caribbean Fantasy’s founder, loved the whole fried fish; try it. Ask them about preparing your own fresh catch!

Taverna is a warm and inviting neighborhood restaurant that offers a truly Italian experience without having to leave Texas. Our Italian chefs strive to create the perfect menu using seasonal ingredients for their surprising entrees; every day we present a variety of northern Italian delights from simple comforts such as pan-seared sea bass to delicate pasta and fabulous risotto. Risotto is indeed our flagship dish. We only use Carnaroli rice – the “king of the rice”; thanks to its particular characteristics and firm texture the Carnaroli grain maintains its shape during the slow cooking required for a perfect and creamy risotto. Our broad offering includes truffle oil and Parmigiano risotto, bay scallops with home made pesto and an inspired Vin Santo risotto with asparagus and prosciutto. A taverna in Italy is a special place where customers become friends and family. Here we celebrate the essence of hospitality and farm-to-table cooking reflecting our authentic Italian flavors in our rustic and welcoming interiors. Whether you want to enjoy our award-winning brunch or just relax on our cozy patio, Taverna is the perfect place for you.

Ana ý Jose’s is near the Sian Kaan Biosphere & has an incredible swimming beach where you can eat and drink. They offer fabulous food and drinks, as well as indoor and outdoor dining. If you decide to use the beach, there is a $25 fee per person, but that will include $15 in food (this may only be charged on busy weeks of the year). Also, try the CESiak restaurant or stop for tours, further south of Ana y Joses, just past the Sian Ka’an arched entrance of the biosphere. Ana y Joses has a new beach club and their own resort. We suggest Ana y Jose’s resort, which is farther south of the beach club, but on the same beach.

Diving:

DIVING: Akumal is famous for some of the best diving in the world! There are great dive shops in Akumal, Aventuras Akumal, Tankah, Soliman Bay, along the highway, and in Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, and Cancun. Although we recommend many of these, our favorite is The Akumal Dive Center on Akumal Bay, ask for Gerardo. They can offer full training and certification. The instructors are fully PADI qualified and should be able to provide lessons or dive tours to fit any requirement or level of proficiency.

Tipping

Employees in Mexico work hard to earn tips. It is customary at vacation rental properties, as well as restaurants and for services. 10-20% is standard. To not leave a tip will insult the employee, as well, it is part of their income. The suggested amounts are $3 - 5 per day/per person for the maid. If there are other staff members (gardener, caretaker, etc), you should also tip them proportionate to their work for you, the total of your tips should equal 5-10%+ of your rent. Properties may also have tipping suggestions in their guide book. Don't forget these sweet employees!

Directions to Akumal

Akumal is about 60 miles (95 kilometers) directly south of the Cancun International Airport. You should feel very comfortable driving; the highway is 4 lanes the entire way. Head south (right) out of the airport on Highway 307. The entrance to “Akumal Playa” is well marked by overhead highway signs. You will see it on your left just after a large overhead pedestrian bridge and a local traffic flyover bridge covered in local art, but the median will not allow you to turn there. As you approach the bridge going north, veer right into Akumal.
