Sightseeing

Chapel transformed from 2 Nissen huts during World War II. Domenico Chioccchetti, Italian prisoner of war, spent many hours with his fellow prisoners, creating this beautiful place of worship. This is within walking distance of the cottage. It is a good hike across the first of the Churchill Barriers - be careful when walking on the causeway. Always be aware of traffic as there are no footpaths. Ample parking for those who want to take the car and to then travel on to other places of interest.

Churchill Barriers constructed between 1940 and 1944. These were built as a naval defence. They link the mainland of Orkney to the islands of South Ronaldsay, Glimps Holm and Lamb Holm. Travelling over the barriers provides the visitor with beautiful views over the flow. There are stopping points between the barriers. Be aware that during strong winds and high tides the barriers may be closed.

Heading into Kirkwall. Approximately 5 miles from the cottage. There is a regular bus service - almost outside the door! Just turn left from the cottage and walk around the corner and you will see the bus stop. St Magnus cathedral's spire can be seen from most places in Orkney. It is worth a visit to find out more about Orkney and its history. There are many places to eat in Kirkwall and great shops to visit too.

It would be best to visit when there are no cruise liners in as often coach trips fill the site during these times. The Broch of Birsay is quite close and you could visit there whilst waiting for a quieter time at Skara Brae. The Broch is accessed by a path that is only accessible when the tide is out. Check tide times. Good beaches and rocks to explore too.

The Fossil Centre is a short drive away, across the barriers and heading towards Burray. The centre was opened by the host's uncle Leslie Firth in 1993. Leslie and his father, Ernest, found fossils at Cruaday Quarry. They were keen to share these with others and donated the collection to the people of Orkney. There are many rare specimens to view. These are displayed alongside heritage objects of interest as well as military items. Information on Scapa Flow with a floor map showing the sites of scuttled German ships is an interesting exhibit. There is a cafe serving home-made food.

A great place to stop and rest following an exploration of the picturesque town of St Margarets Hope or other locations in South Ronaldsay such as the Sands of Wright, Hoxa Head (an impressive wartime site and super walk with stunning views) and Olav's Wood (use your imagination to create your own Gruffalo Hunt following the many trails - take your boots!).

A quiet place to stay. One local shop. Good bus service to South Ronaldsay and to Kirkwall and Stromness. Nice walks. The Ayre Loch has a circular walk and is great for bird watching. Free fishing during fishing season.
