Founded in 1823 by Spanish missionaries, the town of Sonoma is one of the oldest settlements in the region. Unlike the city of Napa, Sonoma has never lost its small-town sensibility as life still revolves around leafy Sonoma Plaza. Streets surrounding the plaza are lined with architecturally-beautiful buildings that house numerous wine-tasting rooms, bottle shops and restaurants. Just off the plaza is the carefully-preserved 19th-century adobe buildings including the Mission San Francisco Solano and the Sonoma Barracks, once used by the Mexican military. [Il Paradiso in Terra is just 5 miles (13 minutes) by car from the center of Sonoma.]
